The Winters Tale

The Winter’s Tale is a late romance play where it follows a man’s reckless jealousy as it destroys his family and his own conscience. Shakespeare’s play is based on the romance Pandosto: The Triumph of Time by the Elizabethan author Robert Greene published in 1588, with Shakespeare taking a more lighthearted approach to Greene’s story toward the play’s conclusion. The Winter’s Tale has elements of both comedy and tragedy. Polixenes, King of Bohemia, has been on a nine-month visit to the court of his childhood friend Leontes, King of Sicilia, and his wife, Queen Hermione. Leontes becomes convinced (wrongly) that his heavily pregnant wife has been having an affair with Polixenes. Leontes tries to persuade his most trusted courtier, Camillo, to poison Polixenes. Convinced of the queen’s innocence, Camillo warns Polixenes and they depart for Bohemia together.

The wives find he sent them identical letters and take revenge by playing tricks on Falstaff when he comes calling. With the help of their husbands and friends, the wives play one last trick in the woods to put Falstaff’s mischief to an end.
