Mammoth Lakes POLICE DEPARTMENT SEEKS PUBLIC REVIEW and comment ON 2024/2025 Off HIGHWAY VEHICLE GRANT
March 5, 2024 – The Mammoth Lakes Police Department invites the public to comment on the preliminary application to the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle (OHMVR) Division for the 2024 Grant Cycle. The Department’s application was submitted to the state on March 1st and the public review and comment period for the Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program begins today, March 5, 2024, and ends on May 6, 2024, at 5:00 PM.
With this year’s grant application, MLPD seeks to continue the OHV program by securing funding to reimburse Officers’ OHV/OSV patrol time plus administrative costs, to cover another year of storage area fees, and to cover another year of subscriptions for the Garmin devices. MLPD would like to further build upon the program by purchasing a truck to pull the OHV trailers, a windshield and new tires for the Polaris RZR, and winter gloves for OSV patrols. Additionally, the Agency is looking to cover some costs associated with patrols such as a daily use fee for the Polaris RZR plus fuel and maintenance expenses for the RZR and snowmobiles.
MLPD’s Off Highway Vehicle program was launched in 2021 with its first California OHMVR Grant award. The goal of the program is to provide safety and education for both residents and visitors and to reduce intrusions into the wilderness and other protected areas. OHV Law Enforcement protects public safety by patrolling trails that are shared with other outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Officers enforce speeding, driving while impaired, green sticker registration, encroachment/trespass issues, offer accident support, monitor dispersed camping, and more. MLPD continues to support our Allied Agency’s OHV programs, which are critical to the safety and education of the public and off-road enthusiasts.
The Mammoth Lakes Police Department applied for this grant using the State of California’s On-Line Grant Application (OLGA). After the public review and comment period of 60 days, the final application will be submitted by June 3, 2024. Don’t know about Mammoth but there is nothing I like better than a couple of dirt bikes doing wheelies down Willow street in Bishop with a bunch of kids playing in the street.
