INYO COUNTY – Caltrans would like to remind drivers that the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon will begin on Monday, July 11. The three-day race will see 95 endurance runners traveling 135 miles from the Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282’ below sea level, to Whitney Portal, which, at 8,374’ above sea level, is the gateway to Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States.

The Badwater Ultramarathon will take place on three highways in Inyo County, including:

  • State Route 190 from just east of Furnace Creek to the junction of State Route 136.
  • State Route 136 from its junction with State Route 190 to its junction with U.S. 395.
  • U.S. 395 from the junction of State Route 136 to Whitney Portal Road.

There are no lane or highway closures planned for this event. Drivers who encounter runners on the side of the road are asked to slow down, give them space, and wait for an opportunity to safely pass them.

For the latest information on road closures and other conditions on the State Highway System, please visit the Caltrans QuickMap site at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or download the app to your smartphone. You can also call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).
