Due to a rash of bike thefts in Mammoth, police are asking people to be careful where they store their bicycles. Over the last week, Mammoth Police Sgt. Paul Dostie reports that officers have received an average of one stolen bicycle report a day.
The bikes are not being stolen from any particular neighborhood, he reports, but they are generally being taken off of peoples porches. Most of the thefts have occurred overnight and the bikes were taken from first floor porches. So far, the thief or thieves have not climbed up to any second floor decks or porches.
While its probably healthy to have so little worry about crime that we leave our bikes on our front porches at night, it also makes us easy targets. Police are asking residents to secure their bikes overnight.
