State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) Reopens from Winter Closure
MONO COUNTY — Caltrans opened State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) from winter closure at 10:00 am today. This follows weeks of snow removal by Caltrans maintenance crews from Sonora Junction in District 9 and Long Barn in District 10. On State Route 108, maintenance teams encountered snow as deep as 10’ on the highway, along with downed trees and debris as they worked toward the summit of the pass.
This opening marks the earliest that State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) has been opened in the past five years. With snowstorms forecasted in the upcoming weeks, Caltrans may close the roadway in case of inclement weather to protect the traveling public.
Only one Caltrans District 9 highway—State Route 203 at Mammoth Mountain—remains in a winter closure. Snow removal on that highway has already started.
