Snowboarder rescued outside ski area boundary

A combined effort among members of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Mono Search and Rescue and Bishop CHP led to the rescue of a lost snowboarder.

According to the Mono County Sheriff’s Department, David Joseph, 27 of Crystal Heights, California, went snowboarding by himself and unknowingly crossed the western edge of the ski area boundary and became lost. Officers said that Joseph was able to contact his father by cell phone. The man’s father notified Ski Patrol. They began to search for the man but could not find him since it was initially reported he was inside the ski area boundaries.

The Search and Rescue team did pinpoint Joseph’s location when they had him call 911. The California Highway Patrol dispatch center in Bishop received the cell phone call and obtained a GPS location reading from his cell phone. Ski patrollers were then directed to his location which was just outside the ski area boundary. They helped Mr. Joseph back to the ski area where a snowcat transported him to his father.
