Agricultural Disaster Designation

  • Mono County has been designated a contiguous disaster area by the U.S. Department of Agriculture due to ongoing drought conditions.

  • This follows a Secretarial Disaster Declaration on April 6, 2026, which identified Inyo, Riverside, and San Diego as primary disaster counties.

  • Eligible farmers and ranchers in Mono County have eight months (until December 7, 2026) to apply for emergency loan assistance through the USDA Farm Service Agency.

Wildfire Resilience Month

  • May is the 4th annual Eastern Sierra Wildfire Resilience Month in Mono and Inyo counties.

  • The Whitebark Institute will host several community events:

    • May 3: Sierra Spark Regional Wildfire Ready Festival (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM).

    • May 7: Presentation on re-establishing cultural fire in forests (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM).

    • May 28: Wildfire Laboratory Science presentation (5:30 PM – 6:30 PM).

California Rodeo Appreciation Month

  • Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil celebrated the passage of SCR 159, officially designating April as California Rodeo Appreciation Month.

  • The resolution honors the state’s agricultural heritage and the economic impact of rodeos in communities like Oakdale and Salinas.

Free Tire Disposal Weekend

  • Local landfills are hosting free tire disposal for residents from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM this coming weekend:

    • Bishop & Lone Pine Landfills: Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.

    • Big Pine Transfer Station: Saturday, April 25 only.

    • Independence Landfill: Sunday, April 26 only.

  • Residents can dispose of up to nine tires (passenger/truck size, no rims) for free; tire dealers and heavy equipment tires are excluded.
