Local Agency-Community Partnership Unveils New Accessible Recreation Spot at Buckley Ponds
The County of Inyo, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), Wounded Warrior Project, and Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra (DSES) are excited to unveil the latest local project to expand recreational opportunities to all residents and visitors.
An official ribbon-cutting will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2024 to celebrate a newly installed adaptive kayak launch at Buckley Ponds near the Owens River in Bishop. The public and media are invited to attend. Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra will have program information available and LADWP will provide reusable water bottles while supplies last.
The new launch adds more access consistent with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) to the Buckley Ponds – popular with warm-water anglers and oarsmen. It joins existing ADA docks that were installed more than a decade ago by the Bishop Lions Club and other groups with the support of the LADWP. It is a pilot project for LADWP as the agency seeks to increase accessible recreation opportunities on City of Los Angeles-managed property.
Rural Health Clinic Expands Capacity to Reduce Patient Wait Times
Northern Inyo Healthcare District’s Rural Health Clinic (RHC) will increase its capacity and appointment availability starting Monday, July 1, 2024. This expansion will provide more appointment times and enhance access to care for the community.
The decision to expand capacity comes in response to increasing wait times for appointments with RHC providers. According to Dr. Adam Hawkins, Chief Medical Officer at Northern Inyo Healthcare District, the new approach aims to reduce these wait times to a more reasonable period.
To accommodate the increase in appointments, the RHC will slightly shorten the length of some visit types, such as routine check-ups and follow-up visits. Hawkins acknowledged these adjustments will result in less patient time spent in the room with the provider, but will allow the clinic to offer more appointments, ensuring that all patients receive timely care.

Mammoth Lakes, Calif. (June 26, 2024): Mammoth Lakes Tourism (MLT) welcomes two new positions to the marketing team: Laura Wattles as Content Marketing Manager and Sarah Walsh as Marketing Coordinator. These two new positions will support the marketing team’s growing responsibilities and community engagement efforts.
Laura Wattles has lived in the Sierra Nevada for over a decade, working in hospitality and tourism. She has created and run a small “glamping” business, served as Communications Manager for the Yosemite Mariposa County Tourism Bureau, designed for and managed a youth focused screen printing nonprofit, and was the first ever Executive Director for the Yosemite Climbing Association. Most recently, she worked locally with the Ridge Merino team, as well as the incredible Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserves.

Affordable Housing, Community Wellness & Land Tenure Among Core Concerns for Inyo County Residents
June 25, 2024 – (TRUCKEE, Calif.) In partnership with the Sierra Jobs First Collaborative, two workshops were recently held in Inyo County — one took place May 16, hosted by the Bishop Chamber of Commerce, and another took place May 20, hosted by the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce. The workshops engaged residents from across Inyo County who gathered to give input on a number of topics that have emerged as critical to quality job growth and equity in the Sierra region, including housing, social services, physical infrastructure, land management, workforce development, recreation and tourism, sustainable agriculture and more.
The topics of affordable housing and community wellness emerged as key conversation starters among the group of residents who gathered in the Inyo County Consolidated Building’s Community Room in Bishop. In Lone Pine, the topics of community wellness and land tenure/management emerged as key conversation starters among the group of more than 30 residents gathered at Statham Hall.
The input gathered at this workshop, combined with feedback from more than 10 other community workshops held in May across the Sierra region, will be used to inform the strategic recommendations of the Sierra Jobs First Collaborative on how funding should be deployed under California Jobs First to create high-quality, equitable, and accessible jobs in Inyo County while supporting California’s transition to a carbon-neutral economy.
