Another dramatic and tragic example of the deadly consequences of failure to wear a seat belt.chp_logo

The California Highway Patrol reported that early Sunday morning a Johannesburg man, Charles Robert Gregg, 31, apparently fell asleep at the wheel and failed to negotiate a right hand curve in the road for northbound traffic south of Lone Pine.

Officers said Gregg’s vehicle, a 1973 Toyota Mark II, continued straight and crossed the two-way left turn lane, both southbound lanes and continued onto the dirt and grass shoulder. The vehicle hit a wooden fence and overturned at least 1 1/2 times, according to CHP.

Neither the driver nor his passenger, Michael Oak, 51, of Red Mountain, was wearing a seat belt. Both men were completely ejected during the accident. Gregg sustained fatal injuries and Oak was taken to Southern Inyo Hospital with moderate injuries.
