Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has picked a new DWP commissioner to replace the outgoing Mary Nichols. Earlier this summer, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, appointed DWP Commissioner Mary Nichols to serve on the California Air Resources Board, leaving a seat open that the Los Angeles Mayor plans to fill with former State Assemblyman Wally Knox.

In a press release, LA Mayor Villaraigosa calls Wally Knox a “leader on protecting the environment.” Perhaps more significant the mayor adds, “Wally’s expertise in labor relations will be an invaluable asset to the board.”

With the DWP union pushing for more employees, better equipment, and system upgrades, the press release from the Mayor’s office reports that Knox has a “strong understanding of labor relations law,” and has worked for the California Public Employee Relations Board and the National Labor Relations Board.
