What about Bishop, Rovana and Pinecreek bear activity. Pinecreek pack station has been broken into twice. Major damage to buildings and contents. Still bear activity in area as of this date.

The reason for that,if MLPD or BPD “announce” where Bear sightings are that are out of the TOML,within days ,if locations of the incidents are published,there would be a shot-up dead Black Bear on site..
Seen it happen more than once,with both Bears and Mountain Lions..
And then,posted smart-phone photos and “selfies” on the SoCal websites,the guy doing the shooting and killing claiming a Bear “attack” and he was defending himself.

Krad, Mammoth Lakes police department has started putting out these bear beat press releases to show that someone from their department responds to bear calls after the fact. It seems to be a PR thing to show they still do something after getting rid of Steve Searles, Mammoth’s former “Bear Whisperer”.
Bishop Police Department and Inyo County Sheriff’s Department don’t have their own “bear beat” for calls in Bishop and Inyo County. Normally, bears aren’t a big issue. However, droughts, fires, etc. seem to be pushing more bears into local residential areas and into conflicts with people and property. You may find an occasional report listed in the Inyo Register crime watch section, or on the Inyo crime graphics website under bulletins (https://inyo.crimegraphics.com/2013/default.aspx ), IF someone called local law enforcement to report the problem bear and any damage it caused. California Fish and Wildlife don’t seem to publicly list any log of problem wildlife or areas experiencing issues (at least, none that I can find).
And Dennis, before you spout off again, I personally believe it would be helpful for people in residential areas to know if a bear or especially, a mountain lion, has been spotted in their neighborhood. Unlike longtime Mammoth locals, people living in Mustang Mesa or Bishop city limits, are not accustomed to putting electric fences around their gardens or having bears come for their bird feeders. They don’t have bear-proof trash containers and often think nothing of letting their pets out into their yard at night,. So knowing one is around and that they should be more cautious is helpful to all, including the bear.
Wildlife in their habitats is fantastic. Wildlife that has lost their fear of people, associates humans and residential areas with food, kills pets and livestock, and damages property becomes a dangerous situation for all.
If you are having issues Krad, make sure to call and report it to local law enforcement, County Sheriff, or Bishop PD, depending on where it happened. Speaking from personal experience, they have been more responsive than Fish and Wildlife.
Also, it is legal to hunt bears in season and with the proper hunting license/tags. I’d rather have someone take the bear that is breaking into cars and trash cans than one just living it’s life in the mountains.

Bulletins and “warnings ” to “evacuate ” or “shelter in place ” if and when there’s a Bear or Mountain Lion sighting or problem in a neighborhood.
Kinda like what I heard today on the news,for the people in Florida that waited out the storm and damage from Hurricane Ian,NOW being told to “shelter in place ” or for those that did evacuate,a reason to keep certain areas still closed to where they can’t return home yet because of….
The danger of Snakes and Alligators seen in the standing water…
If the settlers heading west in the 1800’s ,if those days were today’s days,there would still be HUNDREDS of settlers and families stranded in the mid-west plains,sheltering in place in their wagons,due to wild Animal dangers,Indian attacks,weather-related problems,etc.
As for your “advise” to “Krad”,remember this…
Any Bear activity reported to Law Enforcement outside of the TOML,and especially in Inyo County,or posting it on social media,a real good chance that information to the public or Law Enforcement will equal a dead Black Bear…
Or Dennis, a lot of us regular people who believe in and practice common sense can simply take some extra precautions if we know a bear is frequenting a residential area. Simple things like bringing in pet food and bird feeders at night. Putting trash cans in our garage or shed (if we have one) instead of in the yard. Keeping fallen fruit off of trees picked up, not leaving fast food trash in our cars, chasing the bears off with loud noises and trying to keep them fearful of humans and away from houses, etc.
And not everyone with a gun is some yahoo social media junkie from L.A. There are plenty of responsible hunters around. Some might have a bear tag. And yes, law enforcement can be a better option when there is a threat to people, especially in a residential area. In my experience, they put a greater concern for people’s safety ahead of Fish and Game bureaucracy.
A little mantra you can repeat that may help. “There are decent people in the world and in my community. I am safe. The sky is not falling”
