Getting the first win of the season was key for the Mammoth High.hool varsity football team. Getting it against archrival Bishop Union High School made it all the more enjoyable.

Mammoth rallied for a 20-18 non-league victory over the Broncos Friday night at Gault-McClure Stadium at the Mammoth school complex, sending the Husky players, coaches and fans into a post-game celebration of high-fives, hugs and tears.

“I knew the boys were going to win some games this year, I just didn’t think it was going to be this one,” Mammoth coach Tom Gault said.

The win was just the fifth for the Huskies in 34 games against Bishop and the first since 2002. The Broncos lead the series, which started in 1974, 28-5-1. Shane Farley rushed for 111 yards on 26 carries, while Casey Baviera had 100 yards rushing on 19 carries, with one touchdown. Matt DeSalvo scored two TDs for the Huskies.

The offensive line of Larry Irwin, Miguel Lopez, Kendan Blake, Robert Eldred, Ian Watters and tight end Greg Bretz dominated the line of scrimmage in the second half. Lopez led the Husky defense with 13 tackles, Bretz had nine with Oswaldo Ayala, Baviera and DeSalvo all had seven.

The Huskies, 1-4, host Mojave in their final non-league action Friday before starting Desert Mountain League play Oct. 12 at Silver Valley. Bishop, also 1-4, has a bye this week and starts High Desert League action Oct. 12, hosting Frazier Mountain.
