Joanie Lubeck: 1935-2015

It is our sad duty to report that Joanie Lubeck of Big Pine passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, from lung cancer in Reno on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. She was 80 years old.

Joanie was born on July 19, 1935 to parents, Mercer (Fred) and Doris Fredendall in Covina, California. She graduated from Claremont High School, and enjoyed a long career as the travel agent for General Dynamics Pomona, and retired to Big Pine to be close to family. Joanie was a long-time member of Big Pine Community United Methodist Church. She was known by many as the “Carrot Lady,” feeding carrots to all the horses and mules at the Big Pine Saddle Club. She loved her Big Pine Fire Department and baked brownies for their fire practice meetings.

Joanie was preceded in death by her parents Mercer and Doris Fredendall, her sister and brother in law, Ann and John Green, and her beloved mule, Jo. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Stacy and Richard Runnells, Melissa and Jimmy Nelson, and Amy Lubeck; her grandchildren, Kylie Williamson, Joel Runnells, Lyndsay Lubeck, Neiko Nelson, Jamie Nelson, and Kayla Nelson; her nephew and his spouse, Kenny and Debbie Green, and her niece, Janice Green.

A memorial service, officiated by Pastors Matt and Erin McPhee, will be held at 1pm on Sunday, October 25, 2015, at Big Pine Community United Methodist Church, located on the corner of School and Crocker Streets in Big Pine. A potluck reception will follow in the Social Hall. The family invites participants to wear bright colors to the service, in celebration of Joanie’s life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Big Pine Animal Shelter, the Big Pine Community United Methodist Church, or the Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department.
