Gloria Melinda (Vassar) Maples was born on March 27, 1943 in Bishop and passed away on April 12, 2025 at Northern Inyo Hospital.
Gloria was the only daughter of Bennie and Gladys Vassar and spent all her life here in Bishop. She attended Bishop Union High School and graduated in June of 1961. After graduation, she began working for Continental Telephone company and worked there until she met and married the love of her life John Maples with whom she met at a Halloween part at a local bar and restaurant named Ricardo’s here in Bishop. After only dating for 2 months, they became man and wife on December 26, 1965 in Hawthorne, Nevada.
They had two daughters during their union they were married for only 13 years before John’s untimely death in July 1979. She is survived by her Daughter: Debra (Maples_ Nisbeth and son-in-law Don Nisbeth of Bishop, Jannette (Maples) Horner and son-in-law Glenn Horner of North Carolina, granddaughters, Kattarina (Nisbeth) Johnson and her husband Christopher and Great Grandsons Leroy Johnson of Bishop and Jacob of Bishop, Emily Nisbeth of Bishop, Anna Habina and her wife Catey of North Carolina, and one Grandson Raymond Horner of North Carolina. Sister-in-law and her husband Carolyn Garcia (Joe) of Clearlake, CA and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a brother Ben J. Vassar of Gardnerville, Nevada.
Graveside services will be held on May 17, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. and she will be laid to rest on top of her husband at the West Line Street Cemetery.
