Dear Friends of Bishop,
The Eastern Sierra’s most exciting season is here — Fishmas, the official opening day of fishing season! Anglers from all over are heading to Bishop to kick off the season with rods in hand and dreams of landing that trophy trout. From the Owens River to the Bishop Canal and up into the alpine lakes, now’s the time to get out there and enjoy the beauty and bounty of spring in the Eastern Sierra.
Fishmas Tips for a Great Weekend in Bishop:
1. Know Before You Go – Fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 and older—grab yours online or at local tackle shops before you cast off.
2. Check the Conditions – Snowpack and weather can impact lake and road access. Stay up to date with the latest from Caltrans and the Bishop Fishing Report for real-time info.
3. Stocked & Ready – Local lakes and streams are getting prepped with trophy trout just in time for opening day. Keep an eye out for fish plant updates from the CDFW.
4. Early Bird Gets the Bite – Opening morning is a tradition around here. Arrive early, dress in layers, and don’t forget your thermos and camera—sunrise on the water is something special.
5. Respect the Rules – Make sure to follow local fishing regulations to help keep our waters healthy and our traditions strong.
6. Gear Up Locally – Support small businesses—grab your bait, tackle, and Fishmas merch from local shops who’ve been part of this tradition for generations.
7. Don’t Move a Mussel! Clean, drain and dry your boat and all equipment to keep invasive mussels out of Eastern Sierra Waters. This practice is more important now than ever to keep the Golden Mussels out of all the lakes in our area. All boats entering Crowley Lake and Klondike lake are subject to LADWP inspection prior to launch. While Crowley and Klondike are the only two currently requiring inspection, it’s imperative that all angler’s pay attention to the clean-drain-dry rule.
Once you’ve hooked the fish, get ready to reel in the good times at these upcoming events!
