TRAFFIC FATALITY IN MAMMOTH LAKES
On Sunday, October 5 at approximately 5:40 pm Mammoth Lakes Police Officers and Mono County Paramedics responded to the scene of a solo motorcycle traffic collision on Meridian Blvd. near Valley Vista Drive. Both the driver and passenger were transported to Mammoth Hospital. The passenger, a 21 year old female, visiting from out of the area, was pronounced deceased. Her name is being withheld pending notification to next of kin. The driver of the motorcycle, Edgar Lee Weaver, Jr., age 31 of Mammoth Lakes, was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno in critical condition.
The investigation is being handled by the Mammoth Lakes Police Department with technical assistance provided by the Bridgeport office of the California Highway Patrol.
The preliminary investigation indicates that excessive speed and alcohol were involved. Weaver was arrested for Penal Code Section 192(c)(1) (Vehicular Manslaughter with Gross Negligence), but not booked due to his hospitalization.
Anyone with information is requested to contact the Mammoth Lakes Police Department at (760) 934-2011.

There are some rumors that Rebecca Dempsey’s family is having trouble finding the funds to return her to the United Kingdom. This is not true. The British Consulate has confirmed that all expenses are being taken care of by the exchange company that coordinated her trip here. Some, including the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, have offered to coordinate a fund raising effort if needed. It’s not, but the support for Rebecca and her family is appreciated.
I’ve seen a go fund me site set up for the driver of this accident by his friends but have yet to see anything for the innocent victim or her family who must be absolutely devastated! It makes you wonder why he’s being so well taken care of considering he was the driver that “allegedly” that caused this while he was “allegedly” under the influence of alcohol. I’ve been in the shoes of the poor girls family once and witnessed the outpouring support of the drunk driver that killed my loved one which was excruciating to watch. People, we need to be mindful of our actions when being “allegedly” under the influence while operating a vehicle. Make the decision before you drink to not drive so we can all be safe around you.
@SierraFan! I couldn’t agree with you more!! Such a tragic accident and all the support goes to “JR” who ultimately took the life of a young girl! Let’s see more support for the family who lost there daughter!!
Actually, there is a Go Fund Me for Beck Dempsey, and Lakanuki had a fundraiser for her family this past Sunday.
My sympathies are strictly for the victim and the victim only.
My heart goes out to both JR – who I’m sure will punish himself more than anyone else. And to the families of that young girl whose life was cut way too short.
You can make a mistake in a car and occasionally get away with it. You better learn early on that a motorcycle does not tolerate mistakes. Too bad the girl paid the price.
Harsh.
Horrible, horrifying, tragic, heartbreaking. Prayers for the victims, their families and friends.
