Lone Pine opens its trout season approximately two months earlier than anywhere else in the Eastern Sierra with the Early Opener Trout Derby, sponsored by the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce on the first Saturday in March, which this year is March 7th, this Saturday! The derby is held at Diaz Lake, located just south of Lone Pine.

Trout Derby 2020 1

Kathleen New, CEO of the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce, says that “the derby is not about competition, but teaching kids how to fish in the Eastern Sierra.” The idea is to get kids enthused by winning prizes and getting excited about fishing in the Eastern Sierra.

New is excited, as she is often prone to do, about the prizes the kids can win, saying that every kid that catches a fish, gets a prize. And this year, every child that enters the derby will receive a new fishing pole!

The streams and lakes are stocked regularly by the California Department of Fish and Game with Rainbow and Brown Trout and a special stocking takes place just prior to the Early Opener Trout Derby. Come and enjoy the out of the way streams and ponds where you can fish for not only trout but bass and catfish too!

The blind bogey prize is $800, sponsored by Gardener’s True Value Hardware.
Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. Anglers must register before 9:00 a.m.
Admission is $10 for adults and juniors, and free for children age 11 and younger.
All the prizes come from donation by local businesses in Lone Pine. The prizes include everything from camping gear to fishing tackle and rods. Several businesses donate gift certificates
.
