Currently Ash is Falling in Bishop, CA.

When wildfires burn in the Sierra or across the West, the flames may be miles away, but the smoke often drifts and settles into valleys and towns. Even when skies look hazy but calm, wildfire smoke carries fine particles and toxins that can affect your health. Here are some steps to help protect yourself and your family:

1. Stay indoors when air quality is poor

If you see smoke or the Air Quality Index (AQI) rises into the unhealthy range, limit time outside. Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible.

2. Create cleaner air indoors

Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter if you can, especially in rooms where you spend the most time. Avoid burning candles, using fireplaces, or running gas stoves, which add to indoor pollution.

3. Use your car wisely

If you need to drive, keep windows up and set the air conditioner to “recirculate” to avoid pulling in smoky air.

4. Wear a proper mask outside

A simple cloth mask won’t block wildfire smoke particles. An N95 or KN95 mask fits tightly and filters fine particles better, offering more protection when you need to be outdoors.

5. Pay attention to sensitive groups

Children, older adults, and people with asthma, heart, or lung conditions are especially vulnerable to smoke. Make extra efforts to protect them and follow their doctor’s guidance.

6. Monitor local air quality

Check reliable sources such as AirNow.gov or your local air district for up-to-date AQI reports. Conditions can change quickly as winds shift.

7. Be prepared for extended smoke events

Sometimes smoke lingers for days. Stock up on basic supplies, medications, and any filters you may need so you can minimize trips outside when the air is worst.

Bottom line: You may not be able to control wildfire smoke drifting into town, but you can take steps to reduce your exposure. Protect your lungs the way you’d protect your skin in a storm—by sheltering, filtering, and staying aware.
