“On October 14, 2022, at approximately 7:14 PM, a 55 year old truck driver from Stockton, CA had parked his semi-truck along the southbound shoulder of US-395 near Lee’s Frontier Gas Station, in the town of Lone Pine.
The truck driver exited his vehicle and began walking east across US-395 toward a food truck located in a dirt parking lot located east of the highway. As the truck driver was walking across the northbound lanes, a 72 year old driver from Cambria, CA was driving a BMW X5 northbound along US-395 at a high rate of speed.
The driver of the BMW failed to see the pedestrian walking across the highway. Due to the driver’s excessive speed, he was unable to avoid the pedestrian. The BMW struck the pedestrian within the northbound number two lane. The pedestrian came to rest along the northbound shoulder of US-395. The BMW sustained major damage and it came to rest just north of the crash scene.
Personnel from Lone Pine CHP, Lone Pine Volunteer Fire Department, Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, and Caltrans responded to the crash scene. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the BMW was not injured.
The identity of the pedestrian will be released by the Inyo County Coroner’s Office after notification of next of kin has been made. CHP wants to remind all motorists to follow posted speed limits and stay alert for pedestrians, especially when traveling through towns along Highway 395.”

Was there a marked crosswalk or was this pedestrian j walking not defending the driver at all I just want to know that could be the difference of driver facing charges or not depending if he has a good lawyer
Of course he was driving a BMW and was from some ritzy coastal community, and surely a member of Friends of the Inyo or Easter Sierra Interpretive Association. Those folks think that Inyo residents are less important than frogs… let alone some poor truck driver, only a servant of the coastal elite.
Good Lord,”Ask a Parent”…
And sometimes ,after I comment on things I feel I go overboard by ranting, but too late to delete or change what I may have said..
So it’s FOI supporters or members, the cause of these terrible accidents in the Owens Valley ?
And the “coastal elite” that run the show up here ?
I can’t even counter-punch with that one…
Makes no sense at all….
Was the driver arrested for man-slaughter?
I seriously doubt it. He’ll pay a fine and go back to his peachy life.
Steve
And after he hit the pedestrian,on the Police scanner,it was first reported having happened at the other end of Lone Pine by the Mobil station, with the caller to 9-1-1,being made by the person driving the vehicle that hit him saying “I “think” I hit someone, and stating HIS car had been totaled…..
That area,a 45 MPH speed zone…not unusual to see vehicles going both north into Lone Pine or south leaving Lone Pine at least 70 MPH or more….recently, when I was heading north into Independence, right before you get to the little shoe store, and right by the flashing sign showing the speed you’re driving,my vehicle registered at 37 MPH….as I passed the sign, another vehicle heading INTO town, the sign registered him going 77 MPH ….going INTO town at 7;30 A.M.
I am not a fan of traffic cameras at every intersection , but I do see a need for them at the entrance of all the towns between Mojave and Mammoth . Doing 75 through these small towns is just plain idiotic , ESPECIALLY for a 72 year old . I thought Seniors were known for going too SLOW .
The Saddest part is this driver who was killed husband, father son brother his not going home. Please please Slow down every one
