Earl Wilson was a terrific guy. I was fortunate to attend many meetings and events with him over the years while covering issues and stories in the county, especially at Board of Supervisors meetings and workshops. He was modest, well-informed, polite, and offering some bit of information that was helpful. He also had an astoundingly wide range of interests and knowledge, along with a wonderfully wry sense of humor.
Earl attended so many of the County Board meetings that whenever he was not there, his absence was noticeable even when you were watching them online or on Channel 12. He would often appear at the podium to offer a few pithy observations. A fixture at the county board meetings and workshops, he may well have had a better attendance record than most of the supervisors. And there were times when you could easily be convinced that he had a better grasp of the issues being discussed than those empowered to make the decisions.
Aside from being just a nice guy, more importantly, he was an informed citizens’ advocate…and a darn good one. I am honored to have known him and more than a little upset at learning of his passing.
He will be greatly missed.
Was really sad to hear this a while back in our astronomy newsletter. I knew him a number of years through various astronomy events. Was very personable and easy to talk to and when I found out he lived in the Lone Pine area, I really liked talking to him about that whole Lone Pine to Bishop area. Made many trips to the Sierras while growing up. Guess we have one more star shinning brightly in the sky now. Our next astronomy outing won’t be the same without him.

Thank you for sharing this. Earl was a terrific guy and I enjoyed my conversations with him at Board of Supervisor meetings.
