The Cartago Fire is burning in the Inyo National Forest at high elevation north of the Cartago Creek drainage.  The fire was reported on Wednesday July 25.  The cause is currently believed to be lightning, but is still under investigation.  The Forest Service responded with resources consisting of one hand crew, two engine crews and two helicopters.  The fire is contained at ½ acre and the crews will continue to monitor after the fire is controlled and mopped up.

Smoke may be seen from US 395, west of the Owens Dry Lake, and from the communities of Olancha and Cartago.  There are no threats to the public or recreational resources at this time.
