BISHOP – Caltrans District 9 has closed a portion of U.S. 395 due to avalanche concerns. The highway is closed through Walker Canyon, from the junction of State Route 108 at Sonora Junction to East Side Lane in Walker. State Route 182 is open as an alternative route. The closure is expected to last until Sunday morning. Caltrans will post updates on this closure to its social media channels on Twitter and Facebook.

That’ll teach ya Sierra Wave! Just reporting a closure and people have to get into arguments! LMAO!!
This is going to be a LONG Winter, as far as road closures go.
Seems nowdays, this day and age, everytime it rains or snows a bit, the answer is ..
SHUT THE HIGHWAY DOWN !!
Makes we wonder how us old-timers drove and were able to survive all these years without the authorities telling us so much and how to do it…
Maybe it’s , in the olden’ days, common sense went a long way, and people could make their own decisions without being told what, when and how to do so much by so many..
David Dense Again,
This story is about avalanche control, not how much snow is on the road now. You know the tons of loose material above you, ready to slide and take you with it into the river? “Old timers” were practicing avalanche control before any of us were born.
God forbid someone warns you what is above the road that you can’t see. Hint, when you hear that bang it is probably the explosive charge for the planned controlled avalanche and not a starting pistol to cross the roadblock.

Pedro
It might be a good idea for you to open your eyes and learn to read.
The story seems to have nothing to do with “avalanche control ” measures taking place, therefore temporarily shutting down the highway.
The story says the “authorities” stating Avalanche CONCERNS..
More so, just another “danger” to be warned about as we live our lives, which usually involves some driving during the winter months.
This time, the dangers above us..not in the sky, where it sometimes tends to cloud-up and rain and snow during winter, or the winds that sometimes accompanies the clouds above, but the fears of the mountainside dumping sheets of snow onto the road and carrying us away, or as you put it, tossing us into the river below.
Denny – The trans Sierra passes that remain open in the winter have devices in place to perform avalanche control. There is no such infrastructure in the Walker Canyon. It might be a good idea for you to open your mind and learn to think.
Containment and separation are often steps in hazard control processes.
Thanks Pedro for putting dense in his place. He has probably only lived here for the mild weather. But he’s an old timer, he knows when its safe….
Ask a Parent.
I can promise you this…..
When I moved to the OV many years ago getting here when and how I did…
And then after I finally settled, got a job and getting things going, weather I dealt with, on the jobs that I got , as well as the early February re-location process I went through getting here and what I had to deal with. you’d know with your statement above that you’re talking out of your rear end and know nothing about…and I promise, you could not do or even attempt to do yourself…or myself either now at the older age..

This couple tried to bypass a closed Hwy 80. Since they did survive their stupidity they filed a lawsuit. My guess is that you, Mr Dennison, would be one of the first in line at the courthouse if you or your family were injured or killed by road conditions.

I’m throwing the B.S. flag on the ground and at you….again…
No lawsuit filed by the Stolpa family that I can find…
Only a movie-deal about this 1993 incident that got them lots of money…
As Columbo used to say, just one more thing, all though no one is probably reading but me and DD, from what I could find, the Stolpa’s made their money by selling their story for a movie, not a lawsuit.
And, what year was that honey?
…Ask a Parent
2000..getting away from bad habits and a lousy life..a 1,000 mile Winter drive that took 43 days with truck problems, running out of money, gas and things along the way, including a 2 week “vacation ” in an abandoned sub-freezing Bridgeport campground…and then another 4 + months in that same tent living along the creek farther south with a mostly Trout diet until enough work came along and enough $$ to get into a place…and then onto my own little business to live to this day…..honey…. try it….you’ll like it.
Uphill, both ways, in the snow…Kudos Bert. For the record, and those interested in justice, the Sheet has reported on the Lone Pine accident.
You would’ve lasted a day….maybe two …

but hey – if sitting in the river in January waiting for rescue sounds like a fun time maybe you should go to work for Caltrans
Speaking of snow plow accidents, I am surprised the story of the recent incident where a snow plow ran over the people in mammoth has not been a story. I guess they want to protect mammoth mountain. So much for transparent journalism.
Kind of like the attempted murder near Crestview this summer. Not a word from the local “news”
BobK
Not the medias fault if they don’t get the story and incident…locals and LE gotta protect tourism $$$$$ above all else and their visiting in “shangri-la “….
Kind of like the Mammoth resident that ran over the truck driver in Lone Pine…
Ask a Parent
That was a very grotesque accident ….
And not really anyone’s else’s business to what happened or the facts of it.
Why would Law Enforcement, the media or anyone else want to put it out there, and even more-so, why would anyone want to even know about it ?
.If you were there, heard about and/ or talked about it in town, one thing.
Another thing to put it all out there for others and all to know about and see, internet chatter back and forth and getting a big rumor mill thing going…
Really Dennis? You are criticizing the internet chatter and rumor mill after saying it’s ok as long as it’s just talked about around town? I’ll also refer you to your reply to Steve back when Sierra Wave posted the press release and how you repeated through internet chatter what was supposedly heard on the scanner https://thereal395.com/chp-press-release-pedestrian-fatally-injured-in-lone-pine-october-14-2022/
And I don’t think Ask A Parent is wanting gruesome details. Many of us are disgusted that most of our local news reporting has become nothing more than a reposting of press releases.. No reporters asking officials questions or following up on the outcomes from any story. Just look back through Sierra Wave’s archives and read some of Bennett’s past work to see how far it’s fallen.
IMO , the story about the trucker getting killed , it just MIGHT make someone think twice about crossing 395 on foot at an uncontrolled intersection , especially on just entering one of the small towns in the OV . I saw a photo of a friend of mine who slipped getting out of her shower and broke her leg (compound fracture) and now , I think about it every time I do the same since . (stitches from ankle to knee) Remembering someone else’s mistake might make you think about not doing the same . just sayin…
Rick
Understood…but..
It seems, just ANOTHER form of babysitting and hoping others might learn a lesson….which they won’t…
Common sense tells me to be really extra careful when crossing HWY 395 and the numerous speeders 24/7 seven days a week, sometimes WELL over 75 MPH in that area…into and out of town…
I hope your babysitter quits!
Dear Dense Dennison,
I worked on the dry lake for over 20 years, I have friends in South County, I used to have nightmares about my commute to and from Bishop, mostly about getting head-oned when a lot of the highway was still two lane. Lee’s was a lunch stop when I didn’t pack my own, and a fuel stop. My friend that was truly a Lone Pine local was always concerned that people were refusing to follow the speed limit on that part of the highway, and I AM HORRIFIED, that this incident happened!
So therefore, I am concerned that some poor guy got runover in my old stomping grounds. People speeding into town (any town) going 70mph when the speed limit is 45, when was he gonna slow down? Not to mention he is a local and should know better. So what is ok with you? No speed limit? There is an intersection close there, 395 and 138 (I think) so automatic crosswalk.
Honestly, what kind of freak are you? You think no one should be concerned that people refuse to slow down through our Owen’s valley towns? What if its a kid next time? Is that someone’s business? Oh, maybe you are this guy, that’s your alias, after all, your real name isn’t Dennison. Drive like a nut and then make excuses.
You have missed my point. The man who ran over the trucker is very rich, so far hasn’t been charged with a crime, even though he was exceeding the speed limit by 25mph. But he’s got the cash, so we aren’t supposed to care that he drives like a maniac. But he’s entitled, right? Maybe you too Dense? You got a crapload of cash to get you out of any bad stuff you do?
I’m sure I and most of the people I know would be in jail or at least be facing some charges, but not your buddy. GO FIGURE!
Ask an idiot
Gotta be the dumbest comment ever coming from you or anyone else…
I’m the biggest opponent to speeders coming from the south or heading back home through the OV towns…
I used to do occasional accident clean-ups in our area,
What does “concern” have to do with reporting facts that’s really no ones business and what good would that do anyway, besides what you’re trying to say here….report….talk and make assumptions…
As far as the driver being a “rich tourist” and feeling “entitled”.
Welcome to America….the way it’s been for a long time, and getting worse…especially up here.
The story of the accident WAS reported by the Sierra Wave and other local news outlets…
What more do you want them to do,,”follow-ups” on details, an arrest or conviction ?
Or maybe Sierra Wave should open a facebook site on the matter where people can comment on…
People want to know why the (well-connected) driver, traveling way over the speed limit, has not been charged with anything for killing the truck driver.
