Caltrans Completes $1.6M South Red Rock Pavement Repairs, Improving Commuter Ride

KERN COUNTY — Caltrans announced today it has completed paving on 1.6 miles of State Route 14 near Jawbone Canyon in Kern County, creating a smoother ride for commuters. The South Red Rock Thin Blanket Project was primarily funded with approximately $1.45 million from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

The project improves driver experience on State Route 14 between Jawbone Canyon Road and just north of Redrock Randsburg Road with new rubberized hot mix asphalt overlay across all four travel lanes that reduces noise. This overlay, along with multiple digouts crews performed within the project limits to remove damaged and rutted pavement, creates a smooth consistency in the pavement that will require less maintenance and extend its service life. Griffith Company, from Bakersfield, was the project contractor.

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually shared equally between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly thanks to the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1.
