BUHS JV Mathletes Place 1st in the League by Hazel Hays
The Bishop High School JV Mathletes had a very successful year, placing first in the league standings with a total of 116 points. (The runner up, Silver Valley, scored 94 points.) Five out the 10 top mathletes in the league are on the Bishop team, a list that includes Banyan Fulkerson, Tulika Deb, Eddy Chavez, Liam Livingston, and Santi Lopez.
The final Mathletes meet was hosted by Desert, although it had to be completed at home for the Bishop team because of the astonishing amount of snowfall that day. This meet was a tie at 20 points between Bishop and Silver Valley High School. Home team Desert netted 14 points. Every math athlete did very well, but Eddy Chavez stood out with an impressive 7 points and was rewarded with an individual ribbon. Ali Rainville, Tulika Deb, and Brady Johnson also received ribbons.
Thinking about joining the team? See if you can solve one of the problems from the Desert meet:
A zoo has zebras and ostriches, which together have a total of 78 legs and 54 eyes. How many ostriches are in the zoo?
“This is an impressive JV Mathletes team! They work hard and enjoy working together.” says Coach DeeDee Buchholz. “Getting first in the league is simply outstanding!” The season is over but we are just getting started. Stay tuned for how we do next year.
