The Bishop Boys Varsity Basketball Team participated in the Harding Memorial Tournament in Morro Bay from Thursday to Saturday and playing 4 games. In Game 3 Bishop faced the Santa Maria Saints. It was a good game. The Broncos were able to come out and take a lead early with good defense and headed to the half up 24-16. The Saints came out in the second half and made a good run. It was back and forth and going into the 4th the Broncos lead was cut to 3, 40-37. The fourth quarter was a good battle but unfortunately the Broncos couldn’t hold onto the lead and fell 52-49. We played good enough to win this game but made too many mistakes and gave the game away. The boys really played a good game. Carlos Sualez had a big game leading scoring with 21 points, followed by Chris Charley with 10 points, Emory Dondero had 7, Jakobe Dondero had 5, Devaun Mitchell and Richie Talavera both had 3, and Elijah Reynolds added 2.
For the next game Saturday morning the Broncos faced the Lompoc Braves. The Broncos were definitely undersized against the Braves but that didn’t stop them one bit. Were were able to have some success getting to the rim and getting out in transition, but so did the Braves. Going into the half the Broncos were down 32-30. We tried to hang around as long as we could but it just looked like we ran out of gas in the second half. The Broncos came up short 64-52. I think playing 10 games in the last 10 days caught up to us at the end and we were just gassed. Leading scorers for the Broncos were Carlos Sualez with 15 points followed by Dom Dondero with 12 points, Richie Talavera had 9 points, and Chris Charley and Jakobe Dondero both had 8.
The Broncos finished the weekend at 2-2 which is definitely a win considering the talent and caliber of teams at this tournament. We made a lot of good progress to where we want to be coming into league play and that’s the goal.
The Broncos will get back to league play on Tuesday when we travel to Frazier Mountain and again Friday traveling to Mammoth to play the Huskies. We will get one game over Christmas break playing against the Templeton Eagles here in Bishop on December 27 at 3pm. So we would love everyone to come out and support our Boys that day. I know it’s everyone’s Christmas break and sometimes that can be hard but we would love to see as many fans as we can there.
Thank you
Brad Weaver- BUHS Boys Varsity Head Coach
