Wadelton: Death Valley National Park Still Welcoming Visitors
Inyo County Supervisor Will Wadelton would like to remind the public that, despite the federal government shutdown, Death Valley National Park is open and accepting visitors.
As was reported during the Board of Supervisors’ November 4 meeting in Tecopa, the park is open with a skeleton crew cleaning bathrooms and operating campgrounds. These employees are being paid using last year’s entrance and camping fees that were intended for park projects such as the rehabilitation work at Scotty’s Castle. The Furnace Creek Visitors Center is also open and staffed, thanks to a generous donation from the Death Valley Natural History Association (DVNHA) that is also paying utilities. DVNHA, in turn, was supplied with donations from other entities, including Xanterra (which owns The Oasis at Death Valley) and POWDR (the concessionaire at Stovepipe Wells).
Park employees have also received support from Inyo-Mono Advocates for Community Action and the Independence Civic Club.
“The generosity being shown to our neighbors in Death Valley is truly remarkable and yet another reason I’m proud to call the Fifth District my home,” said Supervisor Wadelton. “Fall and winter in Death Valley National Park are spectacular and I’m glad the visitor center is open to continue serving the public and educating people on the park’s many wonders. If you haven’t visited the park yet this year, now is still a wonderful time to do so.”
A great opportunity to visit will come this Tuesday, November 11 when entrance fees to Death Valley National Park will be waived in honor of Veterans Day.
