The Bishop Boys Varsity Basketball team traveled to Morro Bay yesterday to compete in the Morro Bay Harding Invitational where they will play 4 games from Thursday to Saturday.
Last night at 7:00 pm we played the Morro Bay Pirates in their home gym to start off our weekend. It was a tough battle, the Pirates came out with the early lead being able to knock down shots and getting second chance opportunities to score. The Broncos just couldn’t get their shots to fall in the first half. We were getting good looks at the basket but just couldn’t get it. The Broncos went in at halftime down 24-16.
The Broncos were able to make the needed adjustments and played a much better second half on offense and defense scoring 14 in each of the last 2 quarters. It was a close game down the stretch, down 36-34 the Broncos got a huge 3 pointer from Emory Dondero to take the lead 37-34. Another clutch shot came from Senior Chris Charley, with the Broncos up 41-38 with under a minute and the shot clock winding down we swung the ball from the top of the key with two passes to get it to Chris Charley in the corner who put up a 3 and knocked it down as the shot clock buzzer went off giving us a 44-38 lead. The Pirates came right back and got a quick 3. Up by 3 and a 4 second difference between shot clock and game clock the Broncos were able to run the clock down and get up a long 3 as the shot clock went off and letting time expire. The Broncos got a big win 44-41 for their first game.
It was a big win, although it wasn’t a playoff game it felt like it to some of our football players after taking a loss in the Semis to Morro Bay. So it was a big win to be able to come to their house and get a much needed win and a little payback.
Leading the way in scoring for the Broncos was Junior Emory Dondero with 13 points followed by Richie Talavera with 9 points, Chris Charley had 8 points, Carlos Sualez and Jakobe Dondero both had 5 points, and Devaun Mitchell and Elijah Reynolds both had 2 points.
The Broncos will be back at it Friday at 2:30 against the Paso Robles Bearcats and ending the day with a 5:30 game against the Santa Maria Saints.
