A long-time resident of Lone Pine, Kristin Palmer, is battling with the threat of an undefined cancer in the prime of her life. At age 30, Kristin, the mother of 4 children between the ages of 4 and 10, is undergoing 16 weeks of chemotherapy plus surgery to be followed by radiation treatment at the City of Hope in Duarte, California.
As with so many families dealing with this dreaded disease the costs are high, both financially and emotionally. The illness has already taken its toll as Kristin has had to quit her jobs in Lone Pine and is very concerned about her future and that of her children.
Denise Kellum, Kristin’s mother, and other concerned family and friends have planned a fundraising event next weekend to help Kristin to pay for transport and accommodation for her treatments as well as subsidize her loss of income.
The event will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the Lone Pine Park from noon to 5pm. Bring the whole family and enjoy the bounce house, face painting, egg toss, musical chairs and karaoke, plus hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs and more. Donations of dry and canned goods are being accepted and a drop box will be available at the park during the event on July 30th.
For those who cannot attend or wish to do more, cash donations are being accepted at AltaOne Credit Union under Palmer Relief Fund, Acct. #90-0742188.
Healthy Communities of Southern Inyo County (HCSIC) is helping to get the word out about this event.

I hope that all of you that listen, read or watch the Sierra Wave, even with all the problems and complaints to be found in other stories, will take the time to support this worthy cause. We are not always in a position to make anything other than complaint in many matters. This young mother’s story is not one of those.
We can all make a difference in the outcome of a personal tragedy such as this one through a simple donation or by offering your well-wishes and prayers or better yet all three! The communities of the Eastern Sierra have a well-deserved reputation for “stepping up to the plate” to help others. Let’s keep that reputation and alive and continue to build on it.
Kristen, know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many of us here in Lone Pine and Independence…and the rest of our Eastern Sierra communities. Be strong…and be confident that the people of Inyo and Mono Counties have never failed those in true need.
As Kristin’s mom, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and concern. It is helping Kristin feel better, breathe a little easier, and keep her awesome, upbeat spirit. We do not know the outcome of this battle, but we do know the outcome of Faith. Kristin is a beautiful person, inside and out, who adores her 4 children, finds good in every situation, and loves her family deeply. Joe, Christina, Michelle- to all her family-Kristin will win!
Kristin you are a beautiful girl with 4 great children. You are young and strong. You are 30 years old and along with Joe, raising 4 young children. if you can do that, you can beat this!I am sending positive thoughts your way, with love, Jenifer
