In a mostly bad news year for the Town of Mammoth Lakes, a bright spot. The Auto Club’s publication called VIA Magazine has named Mammoth Lakes number one in the top five mountain towns.
Mammoth beat out Bend, Oregon; Jackson, Wyoming; Crested Butte, Colorado; and Ashland Oregon. The article says, “Geologic mischief tends to beget unforgettable landscapes – Exhibit A: Mammoth Lakes.” The article goes on to say that the town “squats atop an ancient caldera that, judging by the daily swarms of imperceptible mini earthquakes, is still quite restless.
The article points to footpaths to the “otherworldly Devils Postpile and the dreamy spires of the Minarets in the Ansel Adams Wilderness.” The writer, John Flinn, calls it the most enchanting corner of the entire range. He also plugs Tamarack Lodge.
Auto Club public relations quoted Mammoth Lakes Tourism Executive Director John Urdi as saying, “We’re honored to be named by AAA’s Via magazine as the top mountain town destination in the country. It’s external validation,” said Urdi, “for what we see around us everyday.”

Benett, you should fact check your story better, you are a bit askew here and have spun this one a little to far from the balanced and grounded reporter we know and admire.
They didn’t say anything good about Mammoth, our culture, adventure, atmosphere, amenities, (although Lakefront is always a favorite) or lifestyle. It talked about natures geologic beauty…
That’s like looking at a woman’s figure and judging her personality. She’s beautiful because she is curvy. Oh, and you can get gas and chips there. Quite distasteful!
The only attribute that the story mentions is that the town squats. That sounds more like number 2 to me.
I think upthecreek is on to something here. They can’t even bribe a tripple a writer with a dinner to juice a story right. Something is very wrong in our small hamlet. In fact it’s beginning to stink more and more.
Benett, I have always respected your writing but you have gone off the deep end here.
Where did the thumbs up/down rating system go? Please bring it back to insure integrity in this little journalistic endeavor. It was one of the highlights of my day to see the immediate public feed back. It may have been tough on you but it was truly what the community needs, a big dose of reality and truth.
Realist,
I stand by the accuracy of the story. You can think what you want about the descriptions.

Hey Wayne – be careful what you suggest. I know you’d sure dislike it if June became the new Mammoth. 😉
This is great!!
Now for sure we need a new Town Logo and Sign
Happy days are here again.
I think what VIA magazine should have done, before they came to this conclusion, was travel farther north….into June Lake,Lee Vining,Bridgeport, and the town of Walker…unless they were looking for just a “party town”where they could go skiing, snowboarding, and go out at night and get drunk.
…so maybe now that we are the “…top mountain town destination in the country.” we can stop spending all that money on marketing. We’re number one because of where we are — not what we say we are.
So now, how about spending some money on making the town a better place to live so that when people get here, they won’t be disappointed. Maybe you could use those marketing dollars now.
