Red Tier back just in time for Trout Opener! Businesses rejoice!
On Tuesday, April 13, Inyo County was officially placed in the less restrictive Red Tier, Substantial category, just in time for the Trout Opener on the last weekend of the month. No more Purple Tier, thank you very much! They will now be able to reopen more types of businesses at greater capacity.
There has been a dramatic drop in the numbers of Californians being infected with the coronavirus as more residents get their COVID-19 vaccinations. As of yesterday 23,243,392, vaccine shots have been given. Masking and vaccinations will continue. Hospitalization rates must stay low and vaccination availability high for the state to fully reopen.
According to the Los Angeles Times and the Daily News, the metrics used to sort the counties are changing as more Californians living in areas hard-hit by the coronavirus have been inoculated, currently sitting at over 4 million. After reaching 4 million doses last week, the state rewrote the blueprint yet again, relaxing the criteria to move into the orange tier from a requirement of under 4 new cases per day per 100,0000 residents to under 6; and raised the allowable ceiling for entering the yellow tier to an adjusted daily new case rate below 2 per 100,000 people, up from the old requirement of less than 1.
The changes triggered a wave of reopening, as dozens of counties were cleared to more rapidly progress into less-restrictive tiers. The last remaining Purple Tier county is Merced, and it is close to finally getting out of it with a case rate of 10.1 (per one-hundred thousand), which was what happened recently with Inyo County.
On June 15, the state plans to remove it reopening the economy road map and set that date as the target for full resumption of economic activity after more than a year of coronavirus-related closures.
California will open statewide vaccine access to residents 16 and older starting on Thursday, April 15.
California have administered 23 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, and 38.8% of residents have received at least one shot, according to the CDC. Of those, approximately 875,000 Johnson & Johnson doses have been administered according to the CDC. President Joe Biden has publicly said that, despite the pause in the J&J vaccine, there is enough vaccine available for every American.

Uhh….”Residents without access to a computer…etc.” This statement does not exactly work, although well meant, because people without computer access or no money for it, will never get the message. People in this situation may not even be able to get a copy of The Wave because they are that broke, housebound, or isolated. In other words, old and or just plain broke. Is anyone notifying them by mail? This county has a very large per capita of elderly, as well as people who can’t navigate the internet or know how to text. The state of California now does almost everything on computer, as they don’t want/can’t afford live people to provide services and information. So if you have elderly neighbors, broke neighbors, computer illiterate ones, or maybe ones off the grid, check in on them. Also complain to your elected reps about computer only access. Not everybody is a key board college wiz kid.
Thank you Charles. I and many others have registered both on MyTurn and through the County site. Yet we are unable to make appointments at Vons or NIH even though eligibility opens tomorrow. Why have we not received updates with appointment availability as they did for ages 50+?
Counties as massive as LA opened up to all adults last week, and we have nothing.
It makes no sense.
My wife is waiting for her appointment as well! Then the Johnson & Johnson vaccine “pause” happened! She just wants to get it over with. Thanks for airing your concerns. It’s important to all of us that everyone who wants to be vaccinated will be as soon as humanly possible!
InyoArabians, try contacting Valley Health Team’s Bishop location. I have a few under 50 year old friends that were easily able to get appointments and vaccinations there already.

Inyo County is finally set to allow all those 16+ to be vaccinated starting tomorrow, and yet our county public department has communicated *nothing* to us about where we can go to make those appointments. A week before those 50+ were eligible we were sent multiple emails about “early bird” appointments for them. Now here we are, with fishing opener and massive crowds of visitors from all over packing into our stores and restaurants staring us in the face, and yet more than half of us in the county remain unvaccinated. Ridiculous.
Sierra Wave (and the local newspapers) have reported several times on Inyo County stories and press releases, online at our website and through over-the-air newscasts, on how to register for the vaccine: Here is an excerpt from the past postings: “Beginning Monday, March 15, individuals age 16-64 with certain severe health conditions will be eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccine…”

“Residents without access to a computer can receive registration assistance by leaving their name and phone number at (760) 873-3232. A member of the county team will return the call the following Tuesday or Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon. For those who have computer access and have vaccination related questions, email them to [email protected]. Email is strongly preferred over phone and will be answered quicker.”
Then again yesterday, April 14, Sierra Wave reported that “California will open statewide vaccine access to (all) residents 16 and older starting on Thursday, April 15.” So keep trying! It’s great that you recognize the importance of getting vaccinated. Your point about the “fishing opener” “massive crowds” is well-taken. As to half the county being unvaccinated, that’s not the county’s fault. That is based completely on vaccine availability from the state…and there is not enough supply on hand yet for everyone.
