Help Save the Still Live Cafe! The well-known and loved French restaurant needs our help!
We received a request to pass on information about the recently established GoFundMe campaign for the Still Life Cafe in the town of Independence. They are trying to raise $30,000 to “stay alive” through the pandemic. If you have ever eaten in this little cafe with its French cuisine, then you know if serves some of the best food to be had in the Eastern Sierra. This pandemic is not just killing people, it’s destroying many small businesses.
The Patron family has been coming to the Eastern Sierras since 1987. They fell in love with them and decided to move here in 1993. After making this beautiful place their new home, they decided to try and really make something special where the community and travelers alike could get together and enjoy their passion for French cooking in the place their family had loved for so long.
According to the Patrons, people questioned their choice, a French restaurant in such a small town, but they knew that others would see what they were trying to do. The business grew over the years as they gained wonderful friends and customers from all over the world.
The restaurant’s problems began with the start of COVID-19. Being in such a small town, they have always relied on travelers for a large part of their business, just as many other businesses around here have always done. When traveling stopped, so did a large part of our revenue stream that they used to get through the slow parts of the year and do regular upkeep on their equipment.
The Patrons fell behind without that extra bump, from travelers stop. For example, their walk-in fridge and ceiling is in desperate need of repair and their utility bill has been overdue since March, among other things. Many other businesses in the area received both a PPP loan and a disaster relief loan to help in these tough times, but for some reasons not known to them, they were denied these much-needed funds from the government to stay afloat.
The owners of the Still Life Café know a lot of businesses are struggling right now, but they want to ask if there is any way their community, friends, and friends of friends could help them weather this storm.
If they can get help, they say they could get things repaired and survive long enough to make it to the busy season and get back on their feet. They have dedicated their life and savings into their business and cannot start over as they are much older now.
No one wants to see another small business go under after everything they have all been through. The Patron family is hoping there is a way that you could find it in your heart to donate to their Still Life Cafe GoFundMe campaign to help.

Politics are a sad deal, however, it’s about town in which you reside, helping them is a help to your community and that’s all it should be, the article states they (Still Life Cafe) were denied federal assistance, despite the reason it’s time to step up and assist. I’m not even from the state but I did patronize these establishments as I passed many times and will again and again, so let me in on this discussion. Pizza is highly more profitable the sit down, and how often did you revisit two brothers before revisiting Still Life Cafe? So that in mind I plan on donating to Still Life, when I pass through on business or private. I’m predjudicial as to where I fuel, eat, sleep, never using branded firms but locally owned and operated, though I use the likes of two brothers or still life and being considerate of my all aspects explained, I pick still life at this point.
Curious if they applied for a grant? or the forgivable loan? Curious why the sierra wave is focusing on this particular business. There are many business that have a heartbreaking story and I wish the sierra wave would cover them.
Why a story on this business? They sent us the information and they asked if we would help get the word out. We’re not picking favorites, although this is one of the only restaurants in Independence and it is unique.
Many businesses have gotten assistance. Sierra Wave has reported on grants and small business loans available to businesses for months. Why the Still Life Cafe has not gotten help from the government, as have many others, we do not know.
Welcome to the New World. There are Tons of People down on their luck, and Broke, these Shut Downs have horrible effects on all the Business Community. Call your Congressman.
Is there a “Go Fund Me” for Two Brothers From Italy? Or are they still on the bad list?? Picking winners and Losers…
We all have the option of voting with our wallets. Support what or who you believe in. That pizza joint in BP won’t be seeing any of my money. Don’t know enough about Still Life to have an opinion one way or the other. I have heard their food is quite good though.

I’ve had dinner at the Still Life Cafe on one of my rare dates a while back.
VERY good food,as well as a friendly staff and a nice atmosphere inside the little cafe.
If you go there to eat,I think you’d enjoy it.

Apples and oranges.
The Two Brothers were shut down because of not complying to the COVID restrictions, thinking they were above the rules.
The Still Life Cafe have problems with lack of business,as well as needed repairs to stay in business and prosper,as well as ,for some reason being denied the PPP loan and disaster relief loan that others were getting and got. .
I went to the Go Fund Me website, but there is no Still Life Cafe listed. Maybe post this again once there is a link? I really hate to see this place go under. Michel is such a sweet fella. I remember eating there when they were in Olancha prior to being in Independence.
Thank you for letting us know about the broken links in the article. We re-linked all of them and they appear to be working fine.
And thank you for the support of the Still Life Cafe!
Yay! Thank you, Charles!
