Press release
The Bishop Unified School District in partnership with the Bishop Police Department is pleased to announce a very important informational event designed to raise drug awareness among the parents of our community.
The event is planned for Tuesday September 29 at 6 PM at the BUHS Auditorium and will feature local law enforcement officers and narcotics experts. The audience for this event is anyone within our community who has school age children.
Included in the discussion will be what drugs your children will be exposed to, what signs to look for that indicate drug use, how to talk to kids about drugs, and “The Rule of Five” which recommends that parents start discussing drugs with their children a full five years before the children are typically even exposed to them.
Don’t miss this opportunity to educate yourself about the dangers our students face within our own community and join us on Tuesday September 29 at 6 PM in the BUHS Auditorium.
This is an adults only event but there will be childcare available in classrooms for those parents who cannot provide their own. For more information please contact the main office at any of the Bishop schools. We look forward to seeing you on the 29th!

Jeremiah Joseph….With your post,I somewhat agree on most of it….but we ALL know of young people where nothing works,as far as growing up and/or making the right decisions….and sometimes, the only recourse is jail….not only punishment, but hoping maybe time behind bars might open their eyes….and maybe even above that, depending on the charges and convictions, removing them from society for the sake of public safety.Sometimes the best thing that can happen to a drug-addict is time behind bars,if,for nothing else, getting them away from the element and their “friends”,as well as time to get clean and sober and think about things. The best, and sometimes the ONLY thing for a drug addict to do is move away to a town and place far away from their peers and start over with a new life, new job and new friends…..it can easily be done by those that really want to…problem is,not to many are willing to do that.
I agree, seeing things in a new light by way of a change in perspective or environment does wake people up, yes jail can work, but it has failed society by making us believe it is the best method.. Jail isn’t always the best answer, we are products of our environment on many levels, and some don’t have the ability and/or chance to get out of their “reinforced” environment that led them into jail once they are released…. that is a reason why I believe in paying taxes, to help the less fortunate, youth and elders, I just don’t see that happening, not nearly at its potential..
This is good, tell the kids what they need to hear, we should guide them to a state where they can make educated decisions. Keep it real, tell them how at any point any one of them may be where they are in a position to make a decision that could change the rest of their lives, and if they make the wrong decision they can count on JAIL being the only and best treatment our society gives people who continue to make the wrong decisions.. (Its up to the person and their environment, rehabs don’t necessarily work)…Jail has become our society’s treatment for the mentally ill, addicts, along with the criminals…
Tell the kids why we as a country haven’t moved on from this “war on drugs” and the big money interests at play to keep it the way it is… tell them about other countries and how their whole economies are built around the US drug demand, show them the human and environmental costs for keeping it the way it is, give them examples of what other countries have been doing to counter the negatives that we are surrounded by (Drugs)…
And tell them at some point themselves or someone they hold close might grow to have some sort of chemical dependence or addiction, and nothing can replace somebody being their or being their for someone, that’s mostly the best medicine for all… but It’ll always up to the individual and their environment, the world is in their hands.. give them the truth.
The “drugs are bad” talk just ain’t cutting it! The Laws threat of Non-freedom just ain’t cutting it!
Heroin is readily available just read the arrest reports
20 seniors is a pretty sad turnout Trouble
How about a seminar with the federal govt. the ones who have allowed illegal narcotics to skyrocket in the last 15 years. Talk to the politicians and bankers who launder the money. FOLLOW THE MONEY BOYS AND GIRLS!!!
I almost forgot about good ole ‘Big Pharma’ they love handing out prescription drugs. Prescription drugs makes meth look silly. Big Pharma makes meth by the way.
The legal version. Also THEY MAKE all types of the ‘scourge ‘ drug of our time. HEROIN!!!!
Mexican drug cartels, Big pharma! One legal ,
One illegal.
Please, please, please….include prescription drug use in this seminar. That’s the number one threat to our children right now, and that’s hard to say with how nasty a drug Meth is.
I’m not sure I want to hear parenting advice from our local PD right now.
How sad that you would put your children at risk because you think you are right- that’s the problem with this generation…
Schoolteacher, I’m not sure what your meaning is . But, I am sure that our local police department has set a very sad example of how to behave civily lately. I also think it’s sad that only twenty seniors showed up to the mandatory meeting for kids that want to go to college.
I guarantee you, more than 20 seniors from Bishop High are going on to college, so one has to question either the ‘mandatory’ nature of the seminar or the value of the seminar. Or, possibly, it was for senior’s wanting to go on to 4 year college. That is what has changed in the last 5 – 10 years…the number of students going to JC’s instead has mushroomed, 20 students going to a 4 year college may be accurate.
Student loans are a huge rip off right now….car loans 3%, home loans 4%, govt. backed student loans that pay a small part of your costs 7%, the plus loans 8% with 5 points!!!! When I was in college, home loan rates were 10%, but student loan rates were 8%.
Someone is making bank on ripping off parents and students…it’s a national shame that we allow our young people to be ripped off while trying to get educated so they can compete in today’s world.
sugar magnolia….The reason for the high intrest on the loans is because so many of them are never paid on,let alone paid off….I know of grown-ups 30 + years old getting “student loans”,going to college, both attending and on-line and, more or less, using the student loan money as a way to mooch, pay their bills, and not have to work…using the system with no plans to ever pay the loan back…I agree,it’s a good thing for young people out of high school needing help to get a further education….but there’s always the loop-holes for those that want free money….and the good honest people are the ones to suffer because of it.
