Whether to rely on a consultant or not is the puzzler members of the Mammoth Town Council face in their move to hire a permanent Town Manager. Wednesday night they will consider hiring a consultant to help them, but they may not.
At past meetings, council members had different views of how to proceed with hiring a Town Manager. Councilmen Matthew Lehman and Michael Raimondo winced at the thought of spending $26,000 for a consultant to tell them what to do. Councilman John Eastman said he wanted to wait on the whole issue. Council woman Jo Bacon definitely wants a consultant to help the Council. Mayor Rick Wood, who was initially unsure, came around to the decision that he also wants a consultant.
The agenda item for Wednesday gives the Council a choice – hire one of the recruitment firms they earlier interviewed, hire a different firm or handle the task themselves. The agenda bill, written by Personnel and Risk Analyst Sarah Vigilante, lays out all the Council’s options but pushes for a decision. She says, “It is critical to the long-term stability, efficiency, and health of this organization that the Town Council moves forward with a process for and/ or appointment of a permanent Town Manager at this Time.”
Current Interim Town Manager Dan Holler has also made it clear that he wants the permanent Manager job. The Council has several options – hire an expert to help recruit, use current personnel to help recruit, appoint Interim Manager Dan Holler, appoint someone else, or do nothing.
In other matters before the Council, they will meet the Town’s new Building Official, Steve Stokes, and the new Code Compliance Officer Peter Roman. The Council will hear recommendations for Measure R fall funding and consider an Airport Capital Improvement Plan.

The Mammoth City Council is filled with people who lack leadership, experience, and they are holding positions for the mere purpose of benefiting themselves and their personal gain. (i.e their businesses or for health insurance) It has always been that way and I don’t see much hope for the next candidates. Mammoth stands a slim chance of getting out of this mess.
If tne council can not figure it out by themselves, they have no business being on the TC. Wheres MMM.
I am surprised there is no means to utilize state or county processes to find and hire a new City Manager. This sort of thing is common in small cities all over the state that lack the budget necessary to have big, well developed and well staffed systems for screening and hiring staff. States and counties, however, are big enough agencies to be able to do this sort of work and keep people around and gainfully employed who know how to do this.
Ok, you don’t have any money.
You have no snow and little chance of making your multimillion dollar lawsuit payment due in a few months.
The two guys (Wood and Eastman) who got us into that position want to spend more money to cover up their lack of expertise and prove once more that they don’t know what they are dong.
The only critical, long-term decision to be made is getting rid of these two guys.
6 more months of this foolishness and we get to elect people with business knowledge.
This is not a very hard decision, Dan is the man.

“Tonight they will consider hiring a consultant to help them decide”, whether or not they need to hire a consultant.
Tomorrow night, they will try to decide if they need to go to the bathroom.
