Surveillance footage reveals robbery suspect.
Earlier, Mammoth Police were seeking a potential suspect vehicle related to the Union Bank robber. Now, Police Chief Dan Watson says that the vehicle and its owner have been located and identified. Â He said the MLPD is no longer seeking assistance in locating this vehicle. Police continue to pursue other investigative leads.

The Mammoth Lakes Police Department (MLPD) is seeking the publicâs assistance in locating a possible suspect vehicle related to the Union Bank robbery that occurred on Friday, August 2, 2013.
Vehicle Description: Gold 2006 Toyota Sienna minivan with Iowa license plate 488XJR. The Toyota could possibly be displaying an Arizona license plate.
The amount taken is said to be $1,400.
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of this vehicle is requested to contact the Mammoth Lakes Police Department at (760) 934-2011 or the Mono County Sheriffâs Office at (760) 932-7549 ext. 7.

MAMMOTH LAKES POLICE SEEKS ASSISTANCE IN CAPTURING BANK ROBBERY SUSPECT – Press Release
The Mammoth Lakes Police Department (MLPD) is seeking the publicâs assistance in locating a bank robbery suspect. On Friday, August 2, at approximately 2:45 p.m., a man entered the Union Bank in Mammoth Lakes with a small leather bag. The suspect approached the teller and handed her a note. The note was printed in English and Spanish and read, âROBBERY.â The teller then handed the suspect money. As the suspect walked towards the exit door, the teller activated the silent alarm. The MLPD arrived within three minutes and checked the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
Suspect Description: Male, white, between 55-60 years, 5-9, slender build, white hair covered with a light green baseball cap, checkered white, red, and green long sleeve shirt. The suspect was clean shaven. No vehicle or weapon was seen. Police Chief Dan Watson said the bank lost $1400.
Anyone with information about the suspect is requested to contact the Mammoth Lakes Police Department at (760) 934-2011 or the Mono County Sheriffâs Office at (760) 932-7549 ext.7.

Public pensions are out of control. We need to hit rock bottom before anything will improve.
The public pensions I’m aware of (CalPERS, etc.) are accumulated by the employees’ deductions from their paycheck – not from some hidden taxpayer policy that comes out of your pocket.
Could it be Joaquin, you have not been disciplined enough to put some money away for your retirement and now furious with those who have been saving all this time?
Being that the Eastern Sierra is a wonderful place to retire I understand the popularity of public pensions and the likes and dislikes associated with post on the issue. Howevwer it doesn’t reflect the over all public opinion on the issue.
There’s going to be a lot of crying when public pensions are cut and people find out they didn’t save enough to live comfortably without their public pension. The day is coming like it or not.

Yes, Robert. The Economic Collapse has truly begun. America no longer rules the roost. Like every political/economic power before it: United Kingdom, Roman Empire, Greeks … all had their time at the top and one by one, all of them fell. China is the most logical new power. Why not accept this.
Meanwhile, don’t fall victim to those in power here in the U.S. They have cleverly propagandized the situation to where too many believe the wealthiest should be calling the shots for everyone: trickle-down effect, etc., and F*** the poor. The poor may be poor, but they are not stupid.
Personally, I would stay as far away from any large city as possible and spread civility and harmony in our small, rural communities.

Meanwhile, there’s talk of reducing salaries of qualified, hard-working non-union mono county employees while more progressive areas like SLO are offering more money for their qualified personnel. They don’t want ignorant rednecks running things. But don’t tell that to the worst group of county supervisors in the history of Mono County – they clearly don’t give a damn.

Case in point – the new CAO for Mono County has no plans of moving his family from Sonoma County to Mono County. This has “I’m just padding my resume” written all over it. I thought everybody could see that. How loyal to the residents (and employees) of Mono County can a person be, when the chump doesn’t even plan on living here. Same thing goes for MMM in Mammoth Lakes. No intention of actually living here, getting to know the citizens …
And, of course, the bozo Mono County supervisors believe the new guy is the Golden Boy or something.

I’ve always been a bit suspicious of expensive appointed county/town managers who were hired outside of the districts they will be managing and even more suspicious of those who they themselves and their families have not intention of living where their constituents live. .
Check out any government job website and see how often areas are looking for new County and Town Administrative Officers.
It appears, they move on rather quickly. I wonder why this is?

Movin’ on……How about some of us just going to work,coming home,and enjoying the area up here,and all it has to offer,without holding anyone’s “feet to the fire”,or finding things to make us miserable by thinking too much about the things we actually have no control over anyway.I’m sure all towns and cities have “elected officials” they are unhappy with…but,on top of that,high crime,lots of traffic and traffic jams,tons of people to be dealing with on a daily basis…used to be a 140 mile drive to get to this area,the creeks and campgrounds,and the little town living for the week-end….now it’s a 10 minute drive to get to those things and places….and not just for the week-end….everyday.
Don’t buy into the BS that Mono County and the Town of Mammoth Lakes are going under. This is not going to happen anytime soon.
This sort of political rhetoric is typical of the type of slimy elected official that likes to fabricate a crisis when there clearly is none. Visitations and spending are up -not down
In this case, we are hearing: “Elect me, and I’ll cut and slash costs to where they should be. Everybody makes too damn much money!” (According to Sperlings Cost of Living Calculator, the Town of Mammoth Lakes has one of the highest cost of living anywhere in the U.S.)
But this fact falls on deaf ears of the Supes who know how to create a bogus crisis so they may continue receiving their rather healthy salaries and perks for the part-time work they claim they are doing.
Thing are booming outside of Mono County? That’s not even close to accurate.
Job growth in California is anemic. Job growth numbers do not indicate a looming recovery.

You’ve been in denial and most likely trying to eke out a living in the Sierra for far too long. You have no idea how well the economy is doing in parts of California – the wineries are booming, the Bay area is doing even better, the San Jose/Silicon Valley area with it’s IT businesses is having record-breaking quarters, tourism is booming in the wine counties, and even marijuana growers are striking it rich!
This particular area is anemic however, because it is totally dependent upon the ski industry and fishermen don’t generate gazillions.

The State of California is the 3rd to 5th largest free-standing economy in the entire world. It could prosper totally on its own.

California does have various micro economies that are doing ok, but over all the State is anemic.
Being a private sector business owner for 33 years I can tell when business is up and when business is down. Now how about the glasses?
California’s economic recovery and economic crisis in Europe should allow the state to regain its No. 7 or 8 ranking in the global economy, according to the Center for the Continuing Study of the California Economy.
Steve Levy, the Palo Alto-based organization’s director, cited the latest data on California’s $2 trillion economy and numbers from the World Bank to conclude that the state should stand alone in the No. 8 position behind the entire United States, China, Japan, Germany, France, United Kingdom (Britain) and Brazil.
“In 2012 California, Italy and the Russian Federation were in a virtual tie for eighth-tenth place with a GDP of $2.0 trillion,” Levy said. “The European recession and California’s strong 2012 GDP growth allowed the state to catch Italy and move closer to France and the U.K. in 2012.
“California posted a real GDP gain of 3.5 percent in 2012 tied with Minnesota for the fifth-highest in the nation behind North Dakota, Texas, and California’s northern neighbors, Oregon and Washington. The U.S. GDP gain was a full percentage point lower at 2.5 percent. California’s strong job gains in 2013 combined with the recent IMF forecast that most of Europe will remain in recession this year means that California will move up in the rankings by the end of 2013.”
Before the surges in China and Brazil, California was ranked as high as No. 6.
Sounds like he fit in too well with the folks that live in Mammoth. Should of only taken a few seconds for the PD to cross the street to find this loser.

Big Al, I have lived a full life without resorting to the barbarity of walking around armed, and I lived and worked in some rough communities south of the San Gabriels. I have been shot at on the street, and I still have a bullet in one of my cars from someone shooting at me on an LA freeway. In no case where I was shot at would possessing a gun have done me any good. You have to be able to see the shooter to engage them effectively and in my experiences being shot at, I could not have engaged the shooter even if I were armed and so disposed.
We have seen armed and trained cops ambushed and killed, including four cops sitting having coffee all shot dead by one assailant outside Seattle. Do you think you could do better? Laughable. Unless you are going to walk around with a gun at the ready, meaning in your hand, having a gun on you buys you nothing. All this gun talk is stupid macho ego talking and not any idea about what you can and cannot do with a fire arm.
Keep a firearm in your home? Yeah, you have the advantage of knowing the terrain. But out on the street you are wasting your time with a fire arm. Keep aware of your surroundings and don’t take chances. A firearm isn’t buying you anything more than you can buy by simple situational awareness.

I don’t carry a gun around day to day, I carry at times, when I feel I need to. I too have lived a while … not carrying a gun around when i don’t have too, yes situation awareness make a big difference. Part of that is knowing when you might have the need to have one handy.
The biggest part is knowing and respecting! … the responsibility of when you do carry, not to be all macho and egotistical .. but if you’re inclined to be that way, then you better be ready to act right or face the consequences.
Trouble…If you were in the bank at the time of the robbery,and shot this guy,without seeing a weapon (the survaillance cameras would have showed),a good chance you’d be in some trouble yourself…..unless your last name was Zimmerman and it happened in Florida.

Trouble….and unless he had a weapon drawn,the least that would happen is having your own life turned up-side-down,probably facing some stiff charges,spending LOTS of money on a lawyer defending you,whether you’d be convicted of anything,or even IF you should be convicted of anything is really beside the point…not to mention,you could be the one shot up,or some innocent person in the bank working or a customer.Easy to say what you’d do in that type of situation…but being in it is a whole nudder thing.Back in 1995, I was held up at gun-point in a little store in Salem,Oregon…he had the drop on me,I didn’t have a weapon with me at the time,but if I did,and if I drew on him,good chance it would’ve been me that ended up in the casket.

Trouble…I agree with what you say about the State and County CCW laws in California…In my opinion,people should be allowed to carry unless they have a record ,or if they get convicted of a misdemeanor or,of course,a felony after they get the permit….In Oregon,it takes a 4 hour class,and $60.00 to obtain a permit…which I got after my robbery.I also agree with the self-defense and “stand your ground ” laws,when they fall into that category,but problem with that is,it allows some to use that defense when it doesn’t apply to the situation.If the laws in California are the same as Oregon,if this guy in Mammoth displayed a weapon during the robbery,he’d be “fair game” to anyone that had a CCW in the bank at the time….but if he just gave a note stating “robbery”,it would be a slippery-slope if someone were to see it as a threat and able to use deadly force or to defend themselves with a firearm….my bet is the guy didn’t even have a weapon with him.But I have to admit,after my 1995 robbery,and after I had a permit,I was kinda hoping the guy would return and attempt to rob me again,maybe with different results the second time around.
I was robbed while being a checker at alpha beta in 1980, guy said this is a robbery give me all the money. I said I’m not giving you all the money unless you have a gun or something worse. He should me a gun, I said thank you and gave him all the money, even the large bills hidden under the cash drawer. He got busted five miles away,,, and there was 100 ways out of town đ

More than three weeks after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, annoyed NRA president Wayne LaPierre told reporters Monday that while he understands the seriousness of the tragedy, he had only assumed the senseless murder of 20 first-graders and six educators by a mentally unstable gunman would have blown over by now.
Noting that the massacre was âalmost a month agoâ and that all of the victims had been laid to rest, the frustrated lobbyist said he couldnât help but think the nationâs continued efforts to mourn victims and its protracted discussions of gun control were âa little muchâ at this point.
âI get that this horrible thing happened and all these kids are dead now, but honestly, how long are we going to keep talking about this?â the gun advocate said as he scanned a recent editorial on weapons permits, adding that âenoughâs enough, you know?â âEverywhere I go itâs Newtown this, Newtown that. Meanwhile, itâs 2013, and weâre still talking about some shooting that happened last year. Seriously, move on already.â
âI mean, jeez, itâs not as if talking about them will bring them back,â he added. âLetâs just get over it.â
The longtime NRA head acknowledged that as someone who has followed dozens of mass shootings over the years, he had anticipated roughly a week or so of mourning following the deadly tragedy, but ânothing like this, for Godâs sake.â
In addition, LaPierre said he was deeply surprised and even somewhat irritated that discussion concerning the heartbreaking loss of young life and the efficacy of existing gun control laws had continued to persist into the new year âas if people had nothing better to do.â
âLook, I get it: A bunch of kids died, and itâs really f*****g sad or whatnot, and blah blah blah, but itâs not the end of the world here, peopleâthe beat goes on,â a visibly agitated LaPierre said. âHell, people die in car accidents every day, and we donât make a big stink about that. We donât shut downâjust totally shut downâeverything for weeks so we can talk about it over and over and over again, do we? Of course not. Oh, but I guess Iâm the bad guy for suggesting we get our priorities straight and stop acting like a bunch of mewling babies because of 20 dead kids. Is that it? Iâm the bad guy?â

Gee Rick, as a 20+ year resident of Chalfant Valley, paying my taxes, maintaining my house, helping my son buy a house in the same neighborhood, getting together with great neighbors, helping each other, enjoying the wide open spaces yada, yada, yada, I wanted to give you a piece of my mind, then as I thought about it, I’m just sad for you. Whether a contributor to blogs such as this chooses to give his given birth name, a fictitious name, a slang name, a shortened name, a foreign name or no name whatsoever, it seems to me it is the CONTENT of that person’s posting that should be most meaningful, factual, and perhaps outside the realm of political propaganda.
What tends to happen on blogs such as this is a subtle or not-so-subtle attempt at personal therapy. Some of the postings indicate the poster’s age falls into the category of a pre-teenager.
When this occurs, an otherwise thoughtful, factual, and even meaningful opportunity to share one’s thoughts rapidly deteriorates into a childish mud-slinging and name-calling event.
A person such as this might be better served with talk-radio to pass the time.
