Press Release
Are you looking to adopt a new furry friend? California Adopt-a-Pet Day may be the holiday you’ve been waiting for! On Saturday, June 7, Mono County Animal Services will be celebrating California’s 2nd Annual Adopt-a-Pet Day at the Whitmore Animal Shelter with food, fun, and free adoptions. Don’t miss your chance to learn more about your local Animal Services and bring home a new cat or dog companion!
California Adopt-a-Pet Day has been organized to raise awareness and help make pet adoptions more affordable and accessible. This statewide adoption event involves more than 150 participating animal shelters across California waiving adoption fees for one day to help pets find loving homes. CalAnimals, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, have gathered their resources and funding to make this event possible.
In celebration and support of California Adopt-a-Pet Day, Mono County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees for dogs and cats, as well as hosting food and kids activities from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm on Saturday, June 7, at the Whitmore Animal Shelter, located at 575 Benton Crossing Road, between the Green Church and the Whitmore Pool. All of the animals at the facility will be vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered upon adoption which helps adopters save money in initial medical expenses. Mono County Animal Services also offers volunteer, community service, and foster opportunities at both the Bridgeport and Whitmore Animal Shelters.
According to the ASPCA, the inaugural event last year was a huge success, with 3,609 animals being adopted in one day—far outpacing the goal of 2,024 adoptions. Event organizers have raised the bar for 2025, with a more than doubled new goal of finding loving homes for 5,000 dogs, cats, horses, and other small animals. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal Shelters nationwide every year, and every adoption to a good home helps reduce those numbers. You can help meet California Adopt-a-Pet Day goals by visiting Mono County Animal Services at the Whitmore Animal Shelter on Saturday, June 7, and opening your loving home to a new dog or cat companion.
