FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EASTERN KERN, INYO, and MONO COUNTIES – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the following project work and traffic impacts for the week of January 6 – January 10.

Work schedules are subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials, and/or construction-related issues.

New Traffic Impacts

Eastern Kern County

• State Route 58 Maintenance Lane Closure – On Tuesday, the outside eastbound lane of State Route 58 near Bealville will close so Caltrans crews can perform necessary maintenance work on the #2 lane and shoulder. Eastbound traffic will be limited to one lane for approximately three miles from just east of State Route 223 to just west of Hart Flat Road between 8:00 am and 2:30 pm. Drivers are advised there is no immediate detour around the lane closure, and Caltrans and CHP will be monitoring traffic throughout the duration of the maintenance.
Mojave Conductors – Utility crews will be installing overhead conductors on State Route 58 Monday through Thursday from 6:30 am to noon. Drivers in both directions may encounter five-minute traffic delays between Randsburg Cutoff Road and the State Route 14 overpass.

Inyo County

• West Bishop Utility Work – On State Route 168 (West Line Street) between Red Hill Road and Meadow Lane, utility crews will transfer wire across the highway on Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and overnight Wednesday from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am Thursday. Drivers may experience brief delays.

Mono County

• June Lake Loop Utility Work – On State Route 158 S (South June Lake Look) between Gull Lake Road and Ski Lift Road, utility crews will be installing overhead fiber optic cables Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Drivers may experience brief delays.
• Daisy Bell Testing – State Route 158 S (South June Lake Loop) will close between North Shore Drive and east of Boulder Lodge on Thursday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The closure will allow Caltrans to test its new Daisybell avalanche mitigation system. Drivers will be able to access the town of June Lake and nearby recreation using North Shore Drive.

Ongoing Traffic Impacts

Eastern Kern County

• China Lake Water Main Replacement – On State Route 178 E between N. Brady Street and N. Victor Street, the westbound outside lane is closed while crews replace a water main on Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm. The outside lane will reopen after work hours and the shoulder will close at night.

Inyo County

• Olancha-Cartago 4-Lane Project – Construction continues on the Olancha-Cartago 4-Lane Expressway Project. Northbound and southbound traffic has moved to the new lanes of U.S. 395 and there are now three roads connecting these lanes to the old lanes of the highway and State Route 190: the State Route 190 Connector at the southern end of the project area, Crystal Geyser Road, and Lake Street in Cartago. Northbound drivers will encounter two traffic switches on the new lanes of U.S. 395 and traffic is limited to one lane in each direction through the northern half of the project area. Drivers are advised to follow the directions posted on highway signs and to stay on paved roads if mapping apps suggest a dirt road alternative. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph through the project area and 45 mph through the two traffic switches.
• Death Valley Flood Damage Repair – Repairs to State Route 190 in Death Valley National Park will resume on Monday. Crews will place gabions on the highway shoulder at two locations: roughly three miles east of Emigrant Campground and a quarter mile east of Zabriskie Point. There will be one-way traffic control at both locations and drivers may encounter five-minute delays. Work is scheduled seven days a week from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Travelers are asked to be attentive to workers on the highway, slow for the cone zone, and move over whenever possible to give additional clearance. Be Safe and Be Work Zone Alert!
