EASTERN KERN, INYO, and MONO COUNTIES – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the following project work and traffic impacts for the week of April 7 – April 11.
Work schedules are subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials, and/or construction-related issues.
New Traffic Impacts
Eastern Kern County
· Tehachapi Pass Crack Sealing – On State Route 58 between Broome Road and Woodford-Tehachapi Road at Exit 139, crews will seal pavement cracks on the westbound lanes Tuesday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. There will be intermittent lane closures and drivers may experience brief delays. · Kern River Valley Utility Work – On State Route 178 W from Kelso Valley Road to Fay Ranch Road, utility crews will conduct pole maintenance on Wednesday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. There will be one-way traffic control and drivers may experience 10-minute delays.
Inyo County
· Pleasant Valley Crack Sealing – On U.S. 395 from Mill Creek Road to Ed Powers Road, crews will seal pavement cracks on the southbound lanes Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. There will be intermittent lane closures and drivers may experience brief delays. · Bishop Utility Work – On State Route 168 W (W. Line Street) between Warren Street and U.S. 395, utility crews will install underground fiber optic cable Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Eastbound traffic will shift into the center turn lane and Warren Street will be inaccessible from W. Line Street. Drivers may experience brief delays. · Furnace Creek Wire Crossing – On State Route 190 from Texas Springs Road to Borax Mill Road, utility crews will deliver material off the state highway Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. There will be one-way traffic control and drivers may experience 10-minute delays.
Ongoing Traffic Impacts
Eastern Kern County
· Kern County Lighting Replacements Project – Crews are installing light poles at: · State Route 58 at the westbound Boron Avenue off-ramp, · State Route 58 at the westbound Tehachapi Boulevard on-ramp, · State Route 58 at the eastbound California City Boulevard on-ramp, and · U.S. 395 at the northbound off-ramp to State Route 178 E. Work is scheduled overnight Monday through Friday from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. · Death Valley Flood Damage Repair – On State Route 190 just east of Badwater Road in Death Valley National Park, crews continue flood damage repair. There will be one-way traffic control and drivers may encounter 5-minute delays. Work is scheduled seven days a week from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. · Mojave Barrier Repair – On State Route 14 just south of the southern junction with Business Route 58, the inside lane in both directions and median are closed 24 hours a day while crews repair concrete barriers and guardrail cushions. Work is scheduled Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Drivers may experience brief delays.
Inyo County
· Olancha-Cartago 4-Lane Project – Construction continues on the Olancha-Cartago 4-Lane Expressway Project. Northbound drivers will encounter two traffic switches on the new lanes of U.S. 395 and traffic remains limited to one lane in each direction through the northern half of the project area. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph through the project area and 45 mph through the two traffic switches.
The Olancha Cartago 4-Lane Project received $38.3 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (IIJA) – also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Under IIJA, California will receive an estimated $41.9 billion over five years. IIJA provides significant funding to rebuild California’s transportation system, including support to improve roadways, bridges, freight projects, public transportation, infrastructure safety enhancements, and to increase infrastructure resiliency to the impacts of severe weather and climate change.
