Traffic Accident In Big Pine

On 12/09/2019  officers of the Bishop Area CHP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of US-395 and SR-168 East in Big Pine.

A silver Nissan sedan was attempting a left turn from westbound SR-168 onto southbound US-395 when it was struck by a black Dodge SUV traveling northbound on US-395.

A preliminary investigation on scene indicates that the Dodge was traveling at a high rate of speed through Big Pine just prior to the collision. Fortunately, no injuries were reported by either driver.

This collision is still under investigation by the Bishop Area CHP.

As always, Bishop CHP would like to thank Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, CDFW, USFS and  Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance on scene.

There is a reason most places don’t have freeways running in their front yard!

It’s possible that flashing caution lights would be helpful both as traffic is heading north or south approaching Hwy 168.
Typically, when traffic heading at the north of Big Pine around Baker Creek Rd., people start to put the pedal to the metal in a rush to get quickly up to highway speed.
Perhaps moving the current flashing light on the west side of the roadway as southbound traffic is coming into town, to a quarter or half mile further up to where it would be flashing before the intersection where Hwy 168 joins the 395 “might” reduce traffic speed sooner? Just a thought.
