Wednesday night, firefighters were called out to Warm Springs Road south of Bishop for a report of a suspicious brush fire.

Cal Fire and Bishop volunteers had rushed to the same area on Monday, but that call turned out to be a false alarm. Wednesday night, firefighters found a fire burning through brush, grass, and tules along the river near the bridge at Warm Springs Road.

Winds were light, and Cal Fire Division Chief Roger Thompson said that three Bishop fire engines and three Cal Fire hand crews were able to contain the fire to about an acre in size by about 10:00 pm.

With winds predicted to pick up, a Cal Fire crew stayed in the area Thursday morning to monitor the burned area.

What caused this fire is not known; but with no lightning or downed power lines, Chief Thompson says that the fire was human caused. The fire was not caused by a campfire, he says, but it could have been started by a vehicle. Chief Thompson says that he also has not ruled out arson as a cause.
