Have you ever seen a lumber town when the mill closes? A military town when the base closes? Or how about a mining town when the mine closes? Every town needs something to keep it alive and, like it or not, Mammoth survives because of the visitors. They come here… Read more »
We dont all live in mammoth and would live to see it back to a small town also.
We dont own it and neither do you. We follow the rules and respect this area. Too often we see pure disregard for our environment and our safety by some one racing through town with fishing poles, skis, snowboards, camper van’s, or an rv. I dont know about you but… Read more »
So True. Yes it is a fact that a lot of retired People in the area depend on State/county and local Public Pensions.. Lets check back in a year and see how that is going for you When Gruesome Newsom has no option but to cut Pensions,, and to think… Read more »
tell that to the town of Mammoth Lakes…
Wow. That amount of selfishness and complete disregard for others is rarely displayed out loud, but you managed to do it. So great that you get to live off a retirement check, but some of us up here are trying to pay the mortgage by running a business and paying… Read more »
Agree 100%. However, the tone and statements of many of those folks chiming in on these boards, who are from out of the area, are such that we locals depend on their “tourist dollars” and therefore, because we “rely on them” they can come up here and do as they… Read more »
What a bunch of tools. All you care about is collecting your retirement check while some of us have to run a business to pay the mortgage. You don’t own this place, it belongs to everyone.
Unfortunately, the rural counties rely on tourist revenue for around 60-75% of their revenue probably, people can contact them and ask what services the counties will discontinue without this revenue and the result would be staggering. The loss of employment would be massive and the foreclosures would be every third… Read more »
Good Bye A true statement and post. The grocery stores would still operate. The hardware stores would remain open. People would still drive their vehicles. Cable companies, internet services would still be in demand. LADWP would still be pumping water down south. The County would still operate, hire and employ. Motels would… Read more »
Not seeing another tourist again would be a great thing. Contrary to some beliefs, these communities aren’t all dependent on them. I dont depend on them. Alot of locals dont care for them
isn’t it funny that most cities in the sierra Nevada foothills and the mountains totally Rely on Tourism. But when they see a tourist trying to enjoy the area They call the cops or the forest service. Is that any way to treat your Paycheck. Maybe they need to shut… Read more »
Bleach Babe Here I am again !! Speaking for myself,if not another tourist came to the Sierra,it wouldn’t effect my job or income one single bit. And for those that it would,I kinda like to think they don’t feel so controlled and weak they view them as “their paycheck “…… Read more »
Actually, Bleach Blabber, I’ve called the sheriff a number of times on people camping in non-designated areas with open fires – long before THE VIRUS. Being a tourist in the eastern sierra doesn’t give you the right to either knowingly OR unknowingly break the law and camp where it is… Read more »
Will the campgrounds in the June Lake/Mammoth area be open on June 1st for opening day fishing
Steve Vazquez..
There’s PLENTY of “new camp police” living here in Inyo and Mono Counties, including myself.
We’re obeying the rules, decisions and requests…not so some out-of-towners can come up here thinking they can do as they please.
Relax David.. everything will be OK..The camp Police will put everyone in jail..after they release all the current Prisoners
Bleach Babe
I don’t want to see them go to jail.
Just to move their butts from areas that are closed and not supposed to be.
And if caught doing it again,a big fine would be O.K. by me.
Thanks Karen…
Canyon kid…..the new camp police. Thanks bud
The gate is closed and posted up to $5000 fine. Tent was visible from Glacier Lodge Rd. and the parked car pointed right to the tent. The bathrooms are closed, where do you think they went.
If this keeps up next step will be closing the road.
Saw a tent set up at Upper Sage Flat campground this evening, car parked along Glacier Lodge Rd. had Nevada plates.
According to another story on this website (Seasonal Routes on State Highways in The Central Sierra Open For Summer Season), HWYs 89, 108, 4 and 120 are open. (Yosemite Nat. Park is still closed.)
The State of Inyo is updated every week or so by the U.S. Forest Service, so it stands to reason it would not be the same from week-to-week. The other issue is that one list is put out by Caltrans and the otherby the forest service. Whatever differences between them… Read more »
Only the lower gate on 120W has opened. (Lee Vining up to the main gate). The main gate into YNP remains closed and probably will until the Park opens. See the Caltrans site for current road info. https://roads.dot.ca.gov/
