Sierra Forever to Host the No Man’s Land Film Festival in Bishop and Mammoth Lakes as a Fundraiser for the Bishop Climbing Rangers
Local nonprofit Sierra Forever will host the 10th Annual No Man’s Land Film Festival Thursday evening, March 13, in Bishop, and Saturday evening, March 22, in Mammoth Lakes, bookending the popular Flash Foxy Climbing Festival, scheduled to take place in Bishop, March 14-16.
Locally, No Man’s Land Film Festival is a fundraiser for the Bishop Climbing Rangers, who patrol popular climbing and bouldering destinations from October through May, and educate climbers about responsible climbing, camping, parking and other Leave No Trace principles to minimize environmental impacts. Tickets are available at sierraforever.org/events.
“For the last two years, No Man’s Land has been the kickoff to the Flash Foxy Climbing Festival in Bishop,” said Sierra Forever staff member Kara Flowers, who is one of two Bishop Climbing Rangers and is helping to organize the film festival. “Both of these are women and genderqueer festivals to support the more marginalized parts of the climbing community,” she said. The website nomanslandfilmfestival.org boasts that the festival has been “un-defining feminine in adventure and sport through film since 2015.”
Proceeds from local ticket sales and raffles will help support the Climbing Rangers program which, while housed at Sierra Forever, represents a collaboration among the Bureau of Land Management, Inyo National Forest, L.A. Department of Water and Power, Bishop Area Climbers Coalition, Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Inyo, and Sierra Forever, to promote climbing conservation in the Bishop area.
“The fundraising aspect of the festival is especially important now with federal funding for public stewardship being threatened,” Flowers said. “The money raised at this year’s festival could help us extend our season, pay for more plants from the nursery to plant in restoration areas, and offer funding support for other community outreach projects that we are working on.”
Moreover, she said, No Man’s Land provides a great opportunity for the community to come together and learn more about the stewardship efforts that are currently going on in the Bishop climbing areas. In fact, the lineup of films to be featured in this year’s festival includes a locally produced one, Flowers said, and the filmmaker, from Bishop, will be present to introduce it to the audience.
