Bishop, CA – We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our uncle, Robert Karras, “Bob” at 84. He passed away peacefully in the early morning of Wed Nov 14, 2023 in Bishop, CA. He led a modest and remarkable life filled with service and connection to his family and community.

Bob was born in 1939 in Massachusetts.  When he was four, his family moved to Los Angeles where he grew up and spent most of his young adult life.  He graduated from Dorsey High School, earned an AA degree in electronics, proudly served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard, and began a career as a technician at the Los Angeles phone company, PacBell.

After achieving early retirement from the phone company, he moved to the scenic and peaceful town of Bishop, CA.  There he joined the Search and Rescue team where he devoted his time and energy to helping those in trouble in the mountains.   He also started a new career as a Library Specialist at the Bishop branch of the Inyo County Free Library, where he served for fifteen years before retiring. Then he continued to volunteer up until the time he began to have health issues.

Bob will be remembered not only for his dedicated service but also for his individualistic spirit, his deep care for family and endless play-on-word jokes.

He is survived by his nieces Lorraine and Kim, and grand nieces and nephews Kelly, Eric, Sara, Brandon and Kaylee, and great grandnephew Caleb. He will be deeply missed by his family, relatives, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

A private memorial service will be held for family members.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to “Cure Alzheimer’s Fund” www.Curealz.org (http://www.curealz.org/)   in Robert Karras’ memory.
