Roads and trails to Inyo Craters temporarily closing for hazard tree removal
BISHOP, Calif., September 19, 2024 – To ensure public safety Inyo National Forest officials are temporarily closing the entry roads, trails, and facilities at the Inyo Craters site, located on the Mammoth Ranger District starting September 24th.
A 100-foot buffer area along each side of Inyo Craters Trails, Inyo Craters Road (3S30), Dry Creek Road (3S22), and surrounding roads off Mammoth Scenic Loop Road will be closed in three phases to minimize the impact on public recreation:
- September 24 – October 18: roads (3S106, 3S20, portion of 3S89, 3S109B, 3S30A) will be closed.
- October 7 – October 31: roads (3S30, 3S30F/G/H/J/K/L, portion of 3S22) and trails (2705, 2705A) will be closed.
- October 16 – November 15: roads (3S107, 3S22A, 3S22P, portion of 3S104, 3S104A, 3S104B) will be closed.
The dates for the three closure areas overlap to allow for adjustment of closures as work progresses. Areas may be re -opened earlier if work is completed before the anticipated date.
See the official Forest Order and maps here.
The downed wood from this tree felling operation, consisting mostly of Jeffrey and Lodgepole pine, will be available to take once contractors have completed their work (valid wood collection permit required).
Since other areas of the forest are experiencing tree mortality, these safety tips are important to keep in mind:
- Do not park or linger in an area with dead, standing trees.
- Avoid hiking in areas where there are dead trees during windy days.
