Properly Dispose of Fats, Oils, and Grease during the Holiday Season.

The Mammoth Community Water District Urges Customers to Help Prevent Sewer Backups: “Keep Fats, Oils, Grease, and Wipes Out of the Pipes!”

Mammoth Lakes, California – As families prepare for holiday cooking, gatherings, and increased household activity, the Mammoth Community Water District urges all customers to take simple steps to help prevent costly and hazardous sewer backups. The District reminds residents to never dispose of fats, oils, or grease (FOG) down kitchen sinks and never flush wet wipes or personal hygiene products, even if they are labeled “flushable.”

Holiday meals often generate large amounts of grease and food waste. When poured down drains, these materials cool, solidify, and build up inside sewer pipes—leading to blockages that can cause sewage to overflow into streets, the environment, and even homes.

Please remember to never pour fats, oils, or grease down the sink or garbage disposal. Instead, allow grease to cool and pour it into a container for disposal in the trash. Scrape food scraps into the garbage—not the drain. Wipe down greasy pots, pans, and dishes with a paper towel before washing. Do not flush wet wipes or personal hygiene products, place them in the trash instead. Only the “Three P’s” should be flushed: Pee, Poop, and (toilet) Paper.
