Investigations into a pipe bomb explosion in Bishop continue. Why the bomb was placed, and even who the bomb was targeted toward remain uncertain, however investigators did say that the bomb was placed in a mailbox of a relative of a homicide suspect.

About 9:30 Tuesday night the Sheriffs Department responded to a report of a possible explosion in the 2800 block of Diaz Lane on the Indian Resservation. Detective Jeff Hollowell reports that deputies responded and determined that a pipe bomb had been placed inside a mailbox. The explosion destroyed the mailbox, but there was no further damage to nearby homes. No one was injured in the explosion.

Detective Hollowell said that someone placed the explosive device in the mailbox of a relative of Edward Keller, Jr. of Bishop. He is the 17-year-old suspect in the murder of 29-year-old James Williams last November. In early December, Sheriffs officials said that Keller had confessed to the murder. Hollowell said Keller had been in court earlier in the day. Investigations continue.

Sheriff detectives ask anyone with any information that might help the investigation to call the Inyo Sheriffs Department at 873-7887.
