Pile Burning Within Mammoth Lakes
Bishop, California, January 19, 2026— Good snow coverage has made pile burning ideal to continue fuels reduction efforts in the Mammoth Lakes area. Fire and fuels personnel from the Inyo National Forest will begin ignitions starting tomorrow, January 20th. These crews will burn 50 acres of piles and are scheduled to continue over the next one to two weeks.
Burning will take place in two locations- approximately 2 acres along Lake Mary Road, near Camp High Sierra and 48 acres on Panorama Dome. All projects are part of an effort to create fuels reduction around the areas communities in order to reduce destructive wildfire.
Fire managers work with the Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District and the National Weather Service to minimize smoke impacts to local communities. Smoke will be visible from Mammoth Lakes, Highway 395, Highway 203, and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
