Inyo National Forest receives additional $1.6M to improve campgrounds, accessibility and staff housing
Made possible through funding by the Great American Outdoors Act
Bishop, Calif., June 24, 2024 — On June 4, 2024, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announced its investment of just over $35.6 million in funding from the Great American Outdoors Act. The Inyo National Forest will receive $1.6 million of that to improve campgrounds, day-use site safety and accessibility and staff housing maintenance.
Friends of the Inyo Announces FREE Summer Hikes, Yoga and Single/Multi-Day Volunteering Events Aplenty
Bishop-based conservation nonprofit Friends of the Inyo, whose mission is to protect and care for the land and water of the Eastern Sierra, announces a wide variety of no-cost outdoor summer events to engage with nature and fellow nature lovers beginning this Friday, June 28. Opportunities range from interpretive hikes to nature-based yoga classes, to family-friendly half-day front country volunteering events, to down-and-dirty multi-day backcountry workweek events for heartier souls.
All of FOI’s events are FREE and offered throughout Inyo and Mono Counties, from Bridgeport to Lone Pine. Unless otherwise indicated, most events have a cap and require registration, so interested participants are encouraged to RSVP as soon as they know they will be attending a hike or volunteering opportunity to reserve their spot. Every attendee must register individually (children under 18 must be registered by an adult) at FriendsoftheInyo.org/Events to obtain specific date/time, where-to-meet, what-to-bring, and other safety and physical exertion details unique to each event, as well as to help us control group sizes to prevent environmental degradation.
Eastern Sierra Capital Summit to Provide Small Business Funding Options
MONO COUNTY, Calif. (JUNE 24, 2024) – Local entrepreneurs looking to grow or start their business will have access to dozens of funding options at the free Eastern Sierra Capital Summit to be held online and in person Friday, June 28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
The summit will introduce 10 presenters in a “reverse shark tank” format where lenders and assistance providers will detail loans, investment capital, and grants. Topics will include SBA and traditional small business loan programs up to $10 million, micro business loans that start at $10,000, investment and capital-based programs such as venture capital, crowdfunding, and more.

As some of you may already know, we initially believed our email subscriber list was lost due to a server backup issue caused by a third party. Consequently, we requested everyone to sign up again. However, unbeknownst to us, our newsletter service provider had backed up our email list. Not only did we recover thousands of email addresses, but we also discovered that we’ve entered a higher tier due to exceeding our email quota, which necessitates an increase in our subscription costs.
Liesel Lamia
Lieselotte Babette Lamia (Cisek), “Lisa or Liesel”, of Minnetonka, Minnesota passed away on June 14, 2023. Liesel was born on May 4, 1947 in Zell, Bavaria, Germany.
She was raised by her grandmother in a small Bavarian village until the age of 12 when she moved to the United States with her father, a member United States Air Force. Armed with a German-English dictionary, she learned the language quickly, well enough to win a spelling bee shortly after arriving. Living in Florida, Texas, and eventually near Edwards Air Force Base where her father was stationed. She married Vincent R. Lamia III in 1967 while living in the Antelope Valley and eventually the Owens Valley.

Today is the first “Full” day of Summer and the last day of sub 100° temps in the Owens Valley. Saturday / Sunday brings on the heat, with 102° in Bishop. All due to a strong ridge axis located to our South, with a SW flow persisting.

CPUC Rejects AT&T’s Request to Withdraw as Carrier of Last Resort; Opens New Rulemaking Process
Currently, AT&T is the designated COLR in many parts of the state and is the largest COLR in California. Where AT&T is the default telephone service provider means that the company must provide telephone service over any technology, such as copper, fiber, cable, VoIP, or wireless, to any potential customer in that service territory. AT&T proposed to withdraw as the COLR without a new carrier being designated as a COLR.
Following review of AT&T’s request, which received over 5,000 public comments and for which the CPUC held eight Public Forums drawing more than 5,800 attendees, the CPUC today denied AT&T’s request.
