Mary Lou November 16, 1938 to July 15, 2024
It is with heavy hearts we announce on July 15th, 2024, our dear Mary Lou peacefully entered her restful sleep surrounded by family.
Mary Louise Aukee (Menesez) was born on November 16th, 1938, to Patricia and Frank Menesez in Los Angeles, California, the second eldest of eight.
Mary Lou spent her early years in Pomona, California, until 1952 when her family’s car broke down during a trip to Yosemite, leading them to settle in Bishop, California, captivated by its beauty.
Mary Lou started her first job counting and packing worms for Dorothy Vaughn on the banks of Bishop Creek. Even as a young girl, Mary Lou had a love and appreciation for all creatures big and small. She graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1958.
Following high school, Mary Lou briefly moved back to Pomona to study art but returned to Bishop, drawn by her love for the mountains. She started work at the Sport Shop for Mammoth Mountain, offering haircuts to employees on the side. One night while doing hair, a ski patrolman named Daryl, nicknamed “Animal,” came in needing a trim; the rest was history. They had their first date at Convict Lake and were married soon after in 1962. They started their family with their first son, Christian, born in 1963, followed by Jeffrey in 1965, Daniel in 1967, and Marc in 1969.
Inyo County Chief Probation Officer Jeffrey Thomson Honors Staff and Officers Who Help Keep Communities Safe and Support Justice-Involved Individuals in Celebration of Probation Services Week 2024
INYO, CA, July 19, 2024 – Today, Chief Probation Officer Jeffrey Thomson announced this year’s annual Probation Service Week will be taking place from July 21 to July 27, 2024. to honor probation professionals who work to keep communities safe and support the rehabilitative process for justice-involved individuals under their supervision and care. Throughout the week, the Inyo County Probation Department will be showcasing the work Probation does throughout Inyo County to provide accountability, opportunity, and hope for justice-involved individuals — making a real difference in the lives of people by using evidence-based rehabilitation that helps people achieve long-term success and sustainable community safety.
In anticipation of Probation Services Week, Chief Probation Officer Jeffrey Thomson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Probation Services Week is the perfect opportunity for the community to recognize the work that probation professionals do every day to keep our communities safe. Probation is the linchpin of the criminal justice system connecting justice involved individuals to services and programs providing opportunity and accountability for positive change”.
Dedication Ceremony and Open House at Rural Health Clinic at Southern Inyo Hospital
Lone Pine, CA – July 15, 2024 – The Rural Health Clinic at Southern Inyo Hospital is proud to announce a special dedication ceremony and open house on August 1, 2024, at 510 E Locust Street in Lone Pine. The event will mark the renaming of the clinic to the “Dr. Milton Jones Rural Health Clinic” in honor of the esteemed Dr. Milton “Ben” Jones, also known as “Badwater Ben” and the “Mayor of Badwater”.
Dr. Jones dedicated over five decades of service to Southern Inyo Hospital, leaving an indelible mark on the Eastern Sierra and Death Valley communities from 1963 to 2016. His passion for medicine extended beyond traditional practice, with notable achievements in the realm of endurance sports, including participating in several Badwater races in the 1990s, finishing 3.

Truck catches on fire descending Towne Pass
DEATH VALLEY, Calif. – Multiple agencies responded to a truck fire on CA-190 in Death Valley National Park on Monday, July 15. The driver was uninjured, but the stake-bed truck was destroyed in the fire.
The vehicle fire appears to have been caused by overheated brakes while descending Towne Pass, while air temperatures were around 120°F. The Federal Interagency Communications Center received several reports of the fire, at least one of which misreported the location as being in Panamint Valley. The fire was between Stovepipe Wells and Emigrant Junction.
National Park Service (NPS) park rangers responded in an ambulance and patrol vehicles. The NPS was not able to respond with a fire engine due to staffing levels. San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, Beatty Fire Service, and the Bureau of Land Management’s California Desert District Fire provided fire response. The first engine arrived 90 minutes after the fire was reported.
This is the fourth vehicle to catch fire while descending Towne Pass in the past year.

Weather Forecast for July 19th thru 21st
Heat will be the primary weather story thru the weekend into early next week. Heights aloft will build along an expansive upper ridge now over Nevada / CA. Temperatures in the Owens Valley will run around 103°. These conditions will result in Moderate Heat Risk throughout the area. The one difference with this heat wave from the one earlier this month, is the position of high pressure, allowing monsoonal moisture to filter into the area, particularly late weekend into early next week. Thunderstorm development then could limit daytime heating a bit, with cloud cover and precipitation influences. We will see how all this pans out. But anyway you look at it, it’s going to be Hot…DMATT
