The Junior Varsity Mathletes proved that the winter break did nothing to rust their math skills as they claimed the first mathletes victory of the new year. Despite being weakened by missing members, they team fought hard to tie for first.
The increasingly difficult problems and the other teams made a difficult challenge for the Matheles. But Clare Haverstock, who placed third overall in individual scores, in addition to Ruby Vandehoven, Santi Lopez, Amaya Hays, and Adan Perez gathered enough points to come out on top. Together they managed to tie for first place with an incredible 12 points with Rosamond to keep their winning streak alive. Other impressive Mathletes who did not compete as regulars (those whose points do not count toward the team total) this competition are Reagan Dermody, Sydney Garcia, Tatum Swanson, Alexis Solorio, and Kevin Rivas.
These Mathletes went up against the hardest questions yet this season which made the win even more rewarding. From quadratic and cubic to geometry and systems of equations the Mathletes solved it all. The very first problem given to the Mathletes was:
Find the sum of the solutions of the equation 12×2 + 5x = 2
The next Mathletes competition for the JV team is on February 19th at Silver Valley. Coach DeeDee Buchholz adds “This JV Mathletes team just keeps impressing me. They have a lot of depth with so many talented young Mathmatical minds! I believe in them and think we will take home league champs in their last and final Meet next week!” Make sure to cheer them on when the date arrives!
