Bishop Airport Name: The request to name the Bishop Airport after Mammoth icon Dave McCoy was sent to Mono County, Bishop and Mammoth councils for input. Mono was the first to not really weigh in. The consensus of the Mono Supervisors was that adding McCoy’s name was a good idea and appropriate, but it was Inyo’s decision to make. County Counsel Stacey Simon will bring a draft letter in answer to Inyo’s request for input back to the Board at the September 13 meeting.
Solid Waste Franchise Floor Rates: The two waste haulers serving Mono County have
requested an adjustment in the service fee minimum, or floor. The County approved an
increase in tipping fees last spring. The minimum floor rate prevents one of the two companies
operating in the county, Mammoth Disposal and D&S Waste Removal, from undercutting the other. With the closing of the Benton Crossing transfer station, the companies have to trek up to the Pumice Valley landfill, extending the travel time from southern Mono. Under the current contract, the floor rates cannot be increased more than 5-percent annually. The Board
approved the request with a 4-1 vote, Supervisor Rhonda Duggan was the lone no vote.
Mobil Crisis Response Team: The Board approved a memorandum of understanding
establishing the Mono County Mobile Crisis Response Team. The agreement is between the
county’s Behavioral Health, Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Medical Services. As
Behavioral Health Director Robin Roberts explained, her department was awarded grant
funding to develop protocols and procedures to deal with mental health issues. Currently, of
the 100 such calls a year, 41 end up in Mammoth Hospital’s Emergency Department where they
sit while medical cases are channeled through. “Our hope,” she said, “is to get those cases
intercepted and engaged with Behavioral Health before they end up in the ER.”
